I was trained to do project and Maintenance of Steel Plant in Electrical department.
Being in steel Plant is like one has to be Mentally & Physically fit as you have to be very cautious about the powered electrical equipment's, hazardous gases, Heavy Machines and very vast areas .
> There was no such days like it was tough, i used to learn lot of things and used to be challenging every days.
> As being a Junior Manager , I used to have a lot of responsibilities regarding my department . I Used to be the Shift Manager encountering lot of problems, Daily Maintenance, Man power Management, replacement of worn out equipment, calibrating instruments to the accurate readings.Previous shifts follow ups.
>The most challenging part was on night shifts, As In steel Plant my Project and Maintenance area was in COKE OVENS, which supply coke for BLAST furnace, we need to maintain coke supply timely so every thing used to be scheduled ,so making systems stable and run the plant without drop in pushing from the plant and supply to furnace was the toughest part.

Overall a good place to work
one of the largest steel plant in india. I am very proud that i worked in such a company. A very good company to learn a lot of things. Since its a Steel plant you cannot expect a work culture like in an office. Its hard work. Not a white collar job, but its fun. A hardcore mechanical or an electrical engineer will definitely love the job. I myself fell in love with the huge machinery. The management is kind of good. there is room for improvement but once again to run such a huge plant having near to 4000 to 5000 odd people working at a single location i think the management is doing a great job. Plus the township. Its a lovely place to live. With all the amenities like sports club, restaurants, especially a small pub for people to chill with a beer or two after a days work, markets, hospital what else do you need. Not to mention the kind of greenery JSW has very well maintained.
The hard part of the job is as i mentioned since its a steel plant you can expect a lot of dust, smoke, sound and heat at the work place. Its the same in all the steel plants around the world.
there is lot to say about JSW. My career started with JSW and i do not where will i be tomorrow. But JSW will be that one company which i will always remember not cause it was my first job but i got good memories there. Cheers!!!
Sorry for going detail I am not going to tell you possible or negative things decide your self.
Working as a Junior engineer from last 6 years, work culture good enough getting salary 15000 per month in-hand in some cases Yess it's true total in-hand is 23000 with including 8000 incentive if production at high..if there is no production , incentive decreases as per..If there any death in your department any where 8000 become zero..so overall policy are too bad..if you are married very difficult to survive. Townships are not ready you have to get house on rent outside minimum rent is 6500 ..medical service is bad at locality they charge minimum 1000 if enters in hospital ..for management level if you join it's just ok but as lower level its difficult .. salary increment is too low. Note getting good increment in past 6 years salary 15000+ 8000 Incentive when it will become zero you can't predict.
No extra amount for extra work for employees by doing extra work.
Best company to work but salary and policies toward lower level need to improve and township's work need to complete in fast mode.
This was my maiden work experience & i'm very glad it was at JSW Steels, being a company that employed young minds & gave them all the liberty of learning, implementing & influencing like a senior manager was indeed its competitive advantage.
A typical day at work would start from a morning meeting with engineers of different units & was always accompanied by expert advice from peers, all my co-workers were very humorous & joyful yet very disciplined at work. My team leader was my teams pride & also my closest envy, I always looked up to him for guidance & he helped me master my technical skills.
Our job needed constant upgrade of knowledge & patience in approach to the semi skilled workers, the job itself was so inspiring that we would end up working at least 14 to 15 hours a day. We had our share of hard times too with major fatal accidents, delay in commissioning etc, but we always took it as a learning experience & a stepping stone to success & never gave up on completing the project.

Work at JSW is sometimes good and sometimes goes too hectic, need to stay even for more than 14 Hours a day.JSW gave lot to learn as a fresher but lacked training program. We found very Helping seniors,co-workers but i still think lot of improvement required in case of training and development of freshers.

Quality Control Inspector II | Baytown, TX | 30 Apr 2013
Very adventurous, exciting, and fun organization to work for.
On a typical day, I would prepare my work area depending which section. For example: if I was in the Mag. section i would retrieve several tools to perform my duties. The tools are a beaker to measure the metal particles, a Black light, and yoke or use the coil system, 1 Mag. field indicator, and a single metal test strip. Induce a magnetic field in the specimen, Apply magnetic particles to the piping surface, View the surface, looking for particle groupings that are caused by defects, Demagnetize and clean the surface of the pipe. Repeat the cycle throughout the day.
Working with this organization I was trained in house on Ultrasonic Testing -UT technique (shear wave beams) for the detection of flaws at or near the fusion line of a weld, or within the weld itself. Also the uses of Automated Ultrasonic Testing - AUT. Automate robotic deployment of UT probes and couplants.
Management was very observant and sticklers for safety and co-workers were so distant that we became anti - social because of our focus on detail and production.
The hardest part to the job was making it to your section in time for work because of the companies parking policy and the location of the individual sections due to the size of the company and distance from the parking area.
The best part of being a NDT technician is that I get to see a lot of things most people don’t get to see and get to go a lot of places most people will never be able to go.
ProsWork format was very organized.
ConsBecause of the assembly format, we would have a very difficult process of returning the piping over the heads of the employees.
Take time to walk the mill to say hello to the employees and assist with questions or concerns. After returning to the office area, prioritize the day with the HR staff with a plan of action or assist them with any unforeseen issues.
You soon learn the challenges employees work with daily, from workplace hazards (steel mill), weather, to personal issues. Working closely with the employees you realize to listen to their needs and become grateful but humble for this opportunity.
Management supports the HR initiatives and works to ensure we have the tools but also allows us the flexibility to perform with the understanding of doing the right thing for the employee.
The culture is an ongoing event due to the many hazards within the mill, frontline supervisors who are in need of continued training and development for our future.
The hardest part of the job is terminating an employee. There is a level of humanity and knowing you are putting an individual out of work which affect the family is never easy. HR is just the vehicle to a series of events and the employee didn't change behavior so you must do you job. It should always be with respect and dignity.
The most enjoyable is recognizing employees for their performance with some kind of reward system. Another is when an idea or project is completed with positive results and both the company and employee benefit from their commitment and common goals.
ProsOpportunity, Quality Management, Positive Culture, Company growth and change
Suitable workplace with poor equipment to work with.
Guaranteed 40 hour work week then your called off because you finished what was there the night before. Equipment so old it's constantly breaking down which stops the whole plant. When you need supplies it takes at least a week to get them and some time two.
Management, I was in a position that once I understood what they wanted me to do in the position I didn't need my hand held.So they where for the most part O.K. However they did play favorite's.
Coworkers, I enjoyed working with them and like to work with them again.
Hardest part, Working with old broken down equipment and equipment that is duct tape and pieced together.Getting supplies. (Laid off along with about 160 coworkers because of poor equipment and nothing for us to do.) When I was told a week before by HR that everything was fine an that I had a sound place in the company.
Most Enjoyable, My e mediate coworkers.
ProsCoworkers, pay fair
ConsOld equipment and being called off for going a good job.
