Great place to work, good people. Admins must be adaptable to frequent changes.
Syngenta has a great benefits package and has many positive employee programs. Their Reaping Rewards health program - offering cash rewards for healthy lifestyle choices - is one of the top in the nation. Syngenta is willing to work with employees on the possibility of flex time, has a good vacation and sick leave policy and most managers are usually open to discussions.
As an international company, policy for Syngenta Greensboro is dictated by the HQ in Basel, Switzerland and any manager who wants to advance in the company understands that a few years in Basel is essential. However, there is a chasm between the two in management style, formality, and simply "how things are done" which can create conflict. At the Administrative Assistant level, and even lower management levels, this sometimes creates difficulty between obeying the boss and maintaining local ways of working. Syngenta is also always updating and changing roles, changing admin responsibilities or procedures. Admins need to be able to adapt and learn new software and ways of working quickly.
There is a subtle and obscure "glass ceiling". It is possible for an Admin to advance to other roles, but it would require strong support from her manager. Women in general have to struggle to advance in the company, and even with a college degree it can be difficult to break out of the admin role. Managers change roles frequently, so an admin has to be flexible and adaptable to a new manager who may have a co

Syngenta Crop Protection is a diverse company which I really enjoyed because I got to meet a lot of different individuals from a diverse culture of people. A typical day at work was working independently with little or no supervision which is something that I have always done while working within the business world. I thoroughly enjoyed my job as administrative assistance which really turned into administrative management as there was little or no guidance from management because they were too busy worrying about their jobs and maintaining. Management in the department that I worked included a lot of unnecessary drama between employees and management and from what I start to understand while I was there is that it was already in existent when I started working in that dept. Had I known I would have definitely not accepted the job. There was not any hard parts about my job because I am a highly organized and as an interpersonal person and I do not meet any strangers and my personality is outgoing and easy. Management decisions always had negative impacts and that was the hardest part of the job. They did not know if they were coming or going. Management was me, a positive individual. It was always business which it should be and not personal but somehow someone in management always tried to make it personal. I think it was their own insecurities and bringing their personal issues to work instead of leaving them at home where they belong. What a shame!
ProsSometimes freebies, i.e. lunches, give-a-ways
ConsNo Vacation Days for Contract Employees which meant no pay if you took a day off for personal time

Working for Syngenta is a very mixed bag. On one hand the work is very rewarding and they are incredibly flexible if you need a day off for appointments and whatnot. However, I have noticed that the training period isn't the best. While I understand that there are many things you have to be trained on in a short amount of time, I still feel it could be less rushed. There are also many management contradictions, one manager will show you one way of doing a certain task while another will panic and tell you it's wrong. The work culture was very awkward and it seemed that a lot of the crew leads and managers set to train newcomers had very poor people skills overall. It never felt comfortable or natural engaging with my coworkers and managers. Athough, I had no qualms with most of my managers, there is one whose behavior I couldn't ignore. I witnessed this particular manager roll her eyes at technicians, threaten to write them up over menial and easily fixable errors, and even call my coworkers incompetent in front of me. To my knowledge nothing had or has ever been done to mediate this huge flaw in their department. I also felt that while the work was redeeming at times, the technicians were severely underpaid for the arduous labor and hot conditions we were required to work in, considering you could get a job somewhere more cushy right now for the same exact pay.
ProsRedeeming work, flexible, lots of independent work
ConsQuestionable management, strange work culture, some confusion on how things are done
The people I worked with made the days enjoyable. However, the people I worked for had the opposite effect on me. This is just particular to my location, so the overall outlook on the company seems bright by what I hear and see. Work/life balance preached during busy seasons but there is no life outside of work during certain months.
As mentioned earlier, the people I worked side-by-side helped the days go by. There is a diverse team with my location in terms of backgrounds (former felons, addicts, people with high school degrees, undergraduate degrees, master's degrees) an ethnicities (white/Caucasian, Hispanic/Latino, African). For the most part, everyone seems to get along with one another.
Employees tend to lack engagement with their roles. One thing is said and done in front of senior leaders while another is actually carried out once left to oneself. Quality comes second to safety at our location. I believe safety is strongly emphasized. Quality takes a back seat to a numbers driven, seemingly arbitrary goal that is set without consulting workers or conditions. Following a written procedure or document exactly as it is supposed to be done would not allow people to hit targets. Very much a 'cover your own rear' environment.
*disclosure: I have been trying to leave/advance after my first 6 months but cannot due to a 2 year location requirement*
