Working with Tata Steel Ltd, is a invaluable experience. Only a lucky few get to work in such a great Organisation.
I started off with Tata Steel Ltd ( then known as The Tata Iron & Steel Company Ltd or TISCO) in 1977 and thru the entire period of my tenure with them which saw tremendous changes in not only the Company but the Country was a checquerd experience. From a'controlled' era of seventies and eighties, the Company quickly adapted itself to the truly free economy era which the country embraced in the nineties. Starting the day in the Company was a joy. You looked forward to meeting up your colleagues and bosses in a very informal yet disciplined atmosphere. The work itself gave you challenges one liked and yet the friendly approach to the customers and the market place was always the supreme consideration. Backed up with the tremendous knowledge that the company had pioneered amazing social changes in its labour and personnel laws our approach to our personnel, staff and officers alike was one of great joy and expectations which was never belied. We knew that we were always on the right path and morality was high in our sights. We learned from experience as we enjoyed the work. The management was always friendly and concerned. While profit was the motive for doing well for the company, the idea of a welfare constituency for our customers and persons we interacted was never away from our thoughts. Our workers and officers reacted with great sense of proportions and helpful nature and we could always walk into any one's cabin with fear or apprehension. The hardest part of the
ProsRewards system, fun to cooperate with each other which made the work so easy.
ConsYes there were long hours. We were always very good at solving crisis situations to our adavantge.

A great opportunity for diverse interactions
1. TATA STEEL offers a good salary , no other company in the same domain offers even half of that. 2.Working culture is awesome. No cast ism or any unfavorable advantage for employees is there. 3. Ethics inside the company is best. 4. Facility for employees is Best as on compare to INDIAN STANDARDS. 5. As the paper work is more, company seems to be working as a government fashion. 6. Top management is helping but whole responsibility of company relies on its MANAGER ,middle level of management. 7. You wont compelled to work hence wont learn much if you dont want to yet it follows worlds best and emerging technologies for its production line.Hence scope for learning is much only limited to your hunger of learning. 8.You will feel proud as it is the few GROUP/COMPANY in worlds who boast and follow ethical practices for everything. 9. In Steel industry at Raw Materials locations (Remote Locations) No other company officers can roam freely as they used to deplete the natural resources .Whole community opposes them. But a TATA STEEL officers can roam proudly because For TATA's Community is not a stakeholder but a very purpose of existence. One Word Comparison: Want an Honest decent and Family oriented life, come to TATA STEEL otherwise rest of companies are waiting for people like you to sustain their business.

Experience at Tata Steel
An organisation which stands on the edifice of Ethics , Human Relations & System & Processes the day in Steel group starts with oath of safety , with all the employees doing Total productive Maintenance on shop floor in the morning with tune at music , understanding fugais (non - abnormalities) with review meeting by Chief of the Plant. Learning is "Lifeline of Tata Steel" on every walk one can learn the unique secret ie "Human Touch " is very much important while running any organization. Steel group teaches the philosophy ie we are custodian of shareholders wealth , our vusion is to generate wealth for the stakeholders but not at the cost of Ethics which is robust pillar of organization. Management of Tata Steel is very much co-operative employee centric for whom "People matters a lot". Tata Steel work culture is very much transparent it gives voice to all employees to speak and voice there issues infront of the Managing Director . The hardest part of job was not to introduce Multi skill horizontal as well as vertical for the plants of Boisar in Mumbai at Tata Steel. The most enjoyable part was playing sports after finishing individual work at Tata Steel . Playing gave us team spirit and transmitted & channelized energy for the betterment of employee as well as organisation.

A good company to start your career especially the values and legacy of this company
Working with an organization of repute of TATA STEEL, the most valuable things I gained are its ethics and legacy. It is an honor to be part of this 100 year old company and learn the basic principles that have helped this company to compete and survive in the market for so long. Professionally, I gained valuable inputs in the operation of iron ore mines. In these 2 years I have gained experience in mine operations, drilling operations, blasting, OB dump management and other administrative works. This allowed me to apply my knowledge in real life situations and to execute safe operations without any reported injuries. I was exposed to TQM practices which won us the Deming Prize and now I am part of the divisional team that is formed to challenge the Deming Grand Prize this year. I have undergone training in SURPAC and STATISTICA - both state of art software's. I also underwent training in safety approved by DU PONT, which is famous for its safe operations.

a very good place to learn, experiment and deliver.work life balance is added advantage.
I was recruited vide campus placement and having joined the company,I opted to stay back, superannuating finally on 1st Jan 2018 after 37 years and 5 months of service. The company has enlightened management practices, provides good learning ambience, gives responsibility and expects delivery from you.A very good city infrastructure(of course, managed by the company) adds to superior work life balance. what finally tilts the scale in company's favour is its ethical practices and the respectful image it carries in society and within business enterprise. i have enjoyed my stint with the company and have no hesitation in recommending others to join it.

Productive and fun in the workplace with many challenges
Tata Steel is made up of a diverse workforce and as an organization they face many challenges in the macro environment. A typical day at work for me, apart from the work I do is socializing with some of the best people I have ever met. I have, over the last 8 years been exposed to construction (from start to commissioning status) of the one and only ferrochrome producing plant in Richards Bay. The highlight of my career is when I became the first employee of Tata Steel (KZN) (Pty) Ltd. I have learnt much about production, maintenance, safety, Health, environment and quality, HR dynamics and various commercial aspects, the importance of clear unambiguous policy and procedure and the importance of cost saving. I have been exposed to all these departments in various ways. Examples follow:- (1) HR: drawing up organograms for the entire organization; looking after staff welfare and monitoring leave. (2) Purchasing: I purchased 90% of all the furniture as well as many other consumables for the plant based on the 3 quote system, cost, history and supply ability of the Supplier. (3) Quality/Commercial: I have been involved in the Quality side of most of our processes in the plant such as Raw Material receiving and handling; how non-conforming products are handled, Final Product receiving and handling and handling of non-conforming materials, Internal audits, issuing QNCs and follow up. Hazardous environment but very safe
Usually very busy start to shift organizing operations and safety brief of team. Being part of a multi disciplined team we all take pride in our safety and ability when operating various machines, pre start checks reporting any defects, incidents, accidents and near misses. Normally we would rotate requirements using 360 excavator,Loading shovel and dump truck ensuring the customer(TATA Steel) has healthy stock levels and deliveries.Tip management and stock pile maintenance must be kept safe and organized as well as haul roads, bunding and edge protection.Excavating materials, loading trucks, screening iron ore and sinter then delivering to bos plant. I am learning always I strive to enhance my skill levels and have proven my continuous improvement beliefs, during last year I added first aid, tractor and trailor and high pressure jetting operator to my skills. My management have great communication skills are extremely safe and are very supportive in all we do. My co workers are highly motivated in safety and efficiency and make my day at work safe and happy with a bit of healthy banter. The hardest part of my work would be some of the wet materials can be difficult to manage and cause loss of traction under tires. But these obstacles I have learned to overcome by segregating wet slurry in ponds and bays, ensuring good housekeeping by keeping floor areas clean and sometimes new stone in pot hole areas. Also using torque assistance on wheeled loader by selecting high gear and low

Challenging work, steep learning curve, great responsibility and rewarding outcomes.
At the height of the project, a typical day at work started off with an early morning meeting to review progress against the plan and agree work to be carried out throughout the day. The day would then continue with work in the field on installation, commissioning or design and whatever other activities (safety audits etc) were necessary. Mixed in were daily meetings with the principal electrical contractors to determine the state of the installation and identify any issues arising and solutions to be implemented. In addition to technical knowledge and skills, I learned a great deal regarding how to approach problem-solving. I learned about the need to take a step back sometimes and consider a problem/situation rather than rushing in headlong with the first solution that comes to mind. I also learned about the importance of devising a plan for whatever activity I engage in to give my efforts structure and focus. The hardest part of the job was the amount I had to learn in a short space of time to effectively deliver the outcomes to further my part of the project and to push the project as a whole toward completion. I had to gain competence in new skills while working on one of the biggest projects in the country. I was in a good position to succeed at this because of the work I put in and the willingness of my co-workers around me to listen, advice and place their years of knowledge at my disposal. The most enjoyable part of the job was seeing the work I had put in

Fitter | Scunthorpe | 27 Sept 2013
Good shift pattern allowing for work/life balance.
A typical day was spent carrying out maintenance work on large steel rolling segments that would come to the fitting shop for effectively a servicing. These were often upwards of 30tonnes in weight and required the use of overhead cranes for moving around the workshop. Different levels of servicing were required, from a quick check of the gapping between the rolls, to a full strip and inspection taking several months to complete. TATA operates quite rightly in a very safety conscious environment, where the belief is that no task is urgent enough that jeopardising our own or workmates safety would be compromised. The immediate middle managers (teamleaders) however were often appointed as time served oppose to quality, leaving myself and co-workers sometimes disillusioned as to the direction the company was willing to take. Many outgoing and forward thinking 'youngsters' such as myself were often over-looked for the people coming to the end of their time (nearing retirement) and whom had happily spent the previous 30 years on the shop floor without ever having the ambition to move through the management. The hardest part of the job was keeping motivated in a sector where due to the economic crash the threat of closure of the plant often lingered above. This taught me that to just knuckle down and work hard is really the only thing you can do. It was this attitude that saw me through a degree in something completely different whenever I felt that I was struggling to cope
ProsShift pattern
ConsPoor talent spotting ability of higher management, causing poor career development.

Safe and Happy work environment
Tata Steel is diverse in culture. It is part of a world renown organization within the Tata Group of companies internationally. The first five years of my service within the organization was exciting and motivating. It was very rewarding and a pleasure working there. The staff were very friendly and supportive. The hardest part of my job was unusually long work hours with little appreciation from my seniors. I was tasked with the job of two people re: Department supervisor and Acting Superintendent with no assistance when required. The most rewarding part of my job was completing every task to the best of my ability even if it meant me working longer hours. Taking on cost saving projects on my individual capacity and achieving my goals, gave me a sense of victory and it persuaded me to do more.Ability to keep a team motivated even during my lowest moments was remarkable because it proved to me that my job was done with skill and not on emotion. The atmosphere changed when the company was taken over by new management. They came in with new rules and regulation some of which were very demoralizing. The manner in which management conducted themselves with regards to communication with staff was extremely poor. Job satisfaction and verbal abuse became so bad that I eventually decided to resign.
ProsNone
ConsExtremely long hours.Working excessive overtime, weekends, public holidays, standby 24 hrs per day for more than 7 days per month
