Why is Expedia Called Expedia? | Rewind & Capture
Learn the inspiration behind why Expedia is called Expedia. Expedia.com was launched in 1996 as a small division of Microsoft to provide consumers with a revolutionary way to research and book travel. In 1999, Expedia.com was spun off from Microsoft and became a publically traded company on NASDAQ under the symbol EXPE. By 2001, Expedia had acquired a number of other travel companies and in 2002 InterActiveCorp (IAC) acquired a controlling interest in Expedia. Expedia grew within IAC, and the company’s synergies with the parent company’s other travel holdings became more and more salient. In 2005, IAC spun out its travel business under the name Expedia, Inc. Today Expedia, Inc. is the parent company to a global portfolio of leading consumer brands.
