The Coding Manager – Operations is responsible for leading and managing medical coding operations, ensuring accurate and compliant coding practices, optimizing productivity, and
supporting revenue cycle performance.
The ideal candidate will possess strong expertise in orthopaedic surgery coding, coding compliance, team leadership, and operational management within a healthcare setting.
Key Responsibilities :
Operational Management
Manage daily coding operations to ensure timely and accurate coding of professional and/or facility claims.
Monitor coding productivity, quality, turnaround times, and operational KPIs.
Develop and implement workflow improvements to enhance efficiency and coding accuracy.
Coordinate staffing, workload distribution, and resource planning.
Support organizational revenue cycle goals through effective coding operations.
Orthopaedic Surgery Coding Oversight
Provide subject matter expertise in orthopaedic surgery coding, including:
o Joint replacement procedures
o Arthroscopy procedures
o Fracture care and trauma surgery
o Spine procedures
o Sports medicine procedures
o Hand and upper extremity surgeries
Review complex operative reports and coding scenarios.
Ensure accurate assignment of CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, and modifier usage
specific to orthopaedic specialties.
Resolve coding denials and appeals related to orthopaedic surgery claims.
Quality & Compliance
Conduct coding audits and quality reviews.
Ensure compliance with payer guidelines, CMS regulations, and coding standards.
Identify documentation deficiencies and collaborate with providers for improvement.
Implement corrective action plans based on audit findings.
Stay current with coding updates and regulatory changes.
Leadership & Team Development
Lead, mentor, and develop coding team members.
Conduct performance evaluations and coaching sessions.
Facilitate on boarding and training for new coders.
Foster a culture of accountability, quality, and continuous improvement.
Reporting & Analytics
Prepare operational reports and dashboards.
Analyze coding trends, denial patterns, productivity metrics, and quality outcomes.
Present findings and recommendations to leadership.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or
related field preferred.
Minimum 5–7 years of medical coding experience.
Minimum 2–3 years of coding leadership or management experience.
Extensive hands-on experience coding orthopedic surgery cases.
Strong knowledge of:
o CPT
o ICD-10-CM
o HCPCS
o NCCI edits
o CMS guidelines
o Commercial payer policies
Experience with EHR and coding software systems.
Required Certifications
One of the following:
AAPC Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
AHIMA Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
