Backend Developer — WordPress / PHP / MySQL

About the Role
We're looking for an excellent backend developer with deep expertise in WordPress, PHP, and MySQL to build, maintain, and optimize high-quality websites and custom solutions for our clients. You'll work on complex, production-grade WordPress builds — writing clean, secure, performant code and collaborating with a distributed team of developers, designers, and specialists.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain custom WordPress themes, plugins, and integrations using modern PHP.
- Write efficient, well-structured MySQL queries and optimize database performance.
- Build custom post types, taxonomies, REST API endpoints, and block patterns.
- Integrate third-party APIs and external services.
- Debug, profile, and resolve performance, security, and compatibility issues.
- Follow coding standards (WordPress Coding Standards, PHPCS) and participate in code reviews.
- Work with version control (Git) and CI/CD pipelines.
- Collaborate with frontend developers and designers to ship complete features.
Required Skills & Experience
- 1+ years of professional backend development experience.
- Strong proficiency in PHP (OOP, modern PHP practices).
- Deep, hands-on WordPress experience — custom themes and plugins, hooks, filters, and the WordPress REST API.
- Solid MySQL skills: schema design, complex queries, indexing, and optimization.
- Familiarity with Git-based workflows.
- Understanding of web security best practices (sanitization, validation, escaping, nonces).
- Strong debugging and problem-solving ability.
- Good written communication, suited to a distributed/remote team.
Nice to Have
- Experience with managed hosting platforms (e.g. Pantheon, WP Engine, Digital Ocean, AWS, Google Cloud).
- Familiarity with Composer, WP-CLI, and build tools.
- Experience with caching, scalability, and high-traffic sites.
- Knowledge of static analysis tools (PHPStan, Psalm) and linting.
- Exposure to headless WordPress or JavaScript frameworks (React/Next.js).
