GuruJal, an initiative of Abhipsa Foundation, is dedicated to achieving water neutrality through innovative, participatory, and hyperlocal groundwater recharge and water management solutions. With over 100 rejuvenated ponds, 700+ rainwater harvesting structures, and 827 million litres of annual groundwater recharge, we are working to make India water secure.
We are seeking a motivated GIS & Hydrology Associate to support geospatial analysis, hydrological assessments, watershed planning, and monitoring of water conservation and restoration projects.
Job Summary
The GIS & Hydrology Associate will be responsible for GIS mapping, spatial analysis, hydrological assessments, field surveys, data management, and technical reporting. The role involves working closely with project teams to support evidence-based planning and implementation of water security and climate resilience initiatives.
Key ResponsibilitiesGIS Mapping & Spatial Analysis
- Prepare GIS maps for waterbodies, catchments, drainage networks, recharge zones, land use, land cover, slopes, and intervention sites.
- Conduct watershed, micro-watershed, drainage, and flow path analysis using satellite imagery, DEMs, and field survey data.
- Develop spatial databases and maintain GIS datasets for project planning and monitoring.
- Support mapping for waterbody restoration, stormwater management, groundwater recharge, and nature-based solutions.
Hydrological Assessment
- Conduct hydrological analysis for ponds, lakes, wetlands, drains, and catchments.
- Estimate runoff, water balance, recharge potential, catchment yield, and storage capacity.
- Support assessment of flooding, waterlogging, drainage challenges, and groundwater recharge opportunities.
- Provide technical inputs for recharge structures, wetlands, rain gardens, bioswales, and other sustainable water interventions.
Field Surveys & Data Collection
- Conduct site visits, GPS mapping, ground-truthing, and field verification of GIS outputs.
- Collect data on waterbodies, catchments, land use, drainage systems, and environmental conditions.
- Support drone surveys, topographic surveys, and bathymetric assessments where required.
- Coordinate with field teams, consultants, government stakeholders, and community members.
Data Analysis & Reporting
- Analyse geospatial and hydrological data to support project planning and decision-making.
- Prepare technical reports, maps, dashboards, survey summaries, and project documentation.
- Support preparation of DPRs, concept notes, project proposals, monitoring reports, and CSR presentations.
- Develop map-based evidence and impact documentation for project reporting.
Monitoring & Evaluation
- Develop GIS-based monitoring systems and dashboards.
- Track project progress, waterbody restoration outcomes, recharge impacts, and environmental improvements.
- Support development of indicators for water storage, recharge, flood mitigation, ecological restoration, and community benefits.
Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Geography, GIS, Geoinformatics, Remote Sensing, Hydrology, Water Resources Engineering, Environmental Science, or Environmental Engineering.
- 2–3 years of relevant experience in GIS, hydrology, watershed management, water resource planning, environmental planning, or related fields.
- Experience with NGOs, CSR projects, consulting firms, government programs, or research institutions will be an advantage.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in QGIS and/or ArcGIS.
- Strong understanding of Remote Sensing and satellite imagery analysis.
- Experience using DEM data for watershed, drainage, slope, and flow accumulation analysis.
- Knowledge of hydrology, runoff estimation, groundwater recharge, water balance, and drainage systems.
- Experience with GPS-based field data collection tools such as KoboToolbox, Google Earth, Google Maps, or similar platforms.
- Ability to create accurate, high-quality, and visually effective maps.
- Strong technical writing, documentation, and reporting skills.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with Google Earth Engine, Python, R, AutoCAD, HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, SWAT, MIKE, or similar modelling tools.
- Knowledge of urban stormwater management, waterbody restoration, groundwater recharge, and nature-based solutions.
- Experience in drone data interpretation, contour mapping, bathymetry, and topographic surveys.
- Familiarity with government datasets, revenue maps, master plans, and drainage plans.
