Position Title: Senior Designer – Carpets, Rugs & Durries
Department: Design & Product Development
Reporting To: Manager Product Development
Location: Manufacturing Unit at Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh
Job Purpose:
To conceptualize, design, and develop innovative carpets, rugs, and durries that align with international market trends, customer requirements, and the company's product strategy. The role is responsible for creating commercially viable collections for export markets, ensuring that designs are aesthetically appealing, technically feasible, cost-effective, and suitable for various manufacturing techniques.
Key Responsibilities1. Product Design & Development
- Conceptualize and develop original designs for carpets, rugs, and durries across various product categories.
- Create seasonal and evergreen collections based on customer requirements and emerging market trends.
- Develop designs for: Hand-knotted carpets, Tufted carpets, Flatweave durries, Jacquard Rugs, Indoor and outdoor Rugs, Custom hospitality and commercial carpets
- Ensure designs are aligned with customer specifications, manufacturing capabilities, and target price points.
2. Trend Research & Market Analysis
- Research international design trends, consumer preferences, and lifestyle movements.
- Analyze market developments in key export regions including:
- United States
- Germany
- France
- United Kingdom
- Netherlands
- Belgium
- Canada
- Australia
- Study competitor collections, color trends, material innovations, and retail preferences.
- Present seasonal mood boards and design inspirations to management.
3. CAD & Artwork Development
- Develop detailed artwork and production-ready CADs.
- Prepare:
- Design layouts
- Colorways
- Repeat patterns
- Scale variations
- Technical design sheets
- Ensure design files are compatible with tufting, weaving, Jacquard, and robotic manufacturing systems.
- Maintain an organized digital design library.
4. Product Sampling
- Coordinate sample development with production, weaving, tufting, dyeing, and quality teams.
- Supervise sample execution to ensure accurate translation of the original design.
- Review and approve strike-offs, loom samples, and production samples.
- Recommend design modifications to improve aesthetics, manufacturability, or cost efficiency.
5. Color & Material Development
- Develop seasonal and customer-specific color palettes.
- Select suitable yarns and materials, including:
- Wool
- New Zealand wool
- Cotton
- Viscose
- Bamboo silk
- Polyester
- PET yarn
- Jute
- Recycled fibres
- Coordinate with dyeing teams to achieve desired color accuracy and consistency.
6. Customer Design Development
- Develop exclusive collections based on buyer briefs and technical specifications.
- Customize existing designs to meet customer branding and merchandising requirements.
- Prepare presentations for international buyers and buying houses.
- Maintain confidentiality of proprietary customer designs.
7. Cross-Functional Coordination
- Work closely with:
- Merchandising
- Production
- Quality Control
- Dyeing
- Sampling
- Marketing
- Sales
- Resolve technical and design-related challenges during sampling and production.
- Ensure smooth communication between design and manufacturing teams.
8. Cost & Commercial Considerations
- Design products within target costing parameters.
- Optimize designs for efficient material utilization and manufacturing processes.
- Balance creativity with commercial viability and production efficiency.
- Recommend alternative constructions or materials to achieve target price points.
9. Design Documentation
- Maintain complete documentation for every design, including:
- CAD files
- Color references
- Yarn specifications
- Construction details
- Technical sheets
- Sampling history
- Ensure proper version control and design archival.
10. Continuous Innovation
- Introduce innovative textures, constructions, weaving techniques, and finishes.
- Explore sustainable materials and eco-friendly design concepts.
- Contribute to the company's long-term product development strategy.
- Mentor junior designers and design assistants.
Educational Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree or Diploma in Textile Design, Carpet Design, Interior Design, Fashion Design, Fine Arts, Applied Arts, or related discipline.
- Specialized qualification in Carpet Design or Textile Design preferred.
Experience
- 2–5 years of experience in designing carpets, rugs, durries, or home furnishing products for export markets.
- Proven experience in developing collections for international buyers, retailers, importers, and buying houses.
- Experience with handmade and machine-made carpet constructions.
