1. Looks out for the safety of all the students by maintaining a vigil during all classes.
· At any given point in time there are tens or hundreds of swimmers in the pool. They have different skills. It becomes important to ensure the safety of all participants. The lifeguard scans the pool continuously for any incident. When any swimmer is seen following wrong procedures, the lifeguard steps in and provides remedial inputs. Whenever there is a possibility of an incident, he swings into action and takes steps to secure the swimmer. Where required, the job holder is able to administer first aid and protect the swimmer before medical help arrives.
2. Sets in place and ensures the adherence of safety rules and regulations.
· The job holder sets in place guidelines and practices for the users of the pool in consultation with the Swim Director. These apply to the safety equipment to be worn by small children / learn to swim program participants, requirements for swimmers before attempting higher level of challenges and availability and positioning of safety equipment.
· The job holder shares these guidelines with other coaching staff and students. He also reviews the availability of safety equipment on a daily basis and ensures constant availability.
· Maintains order in the pool when it gets crowded.
· The job holder also provides training to all the participants on practices they need to be aware of to swim safely.
· The lifeguard may be a qualified swim teacher / swim coach. He is available as an additional swim teacher / swim coach for swimming classes. When there is a need for additional training / coaching time, the lifeguard handles the classes, after ensuring the lifeguard responsibility is anchored by someone else.
3. Relationships with others
The job holder works under the supervision of the Head, NAC. The job holder maintains working relationships with all swim coaches, swim teachers and other administrative staff.
