They serve as a vital link between management and bedside nursing, managing staffing, patient admissions, and resource allocation during their shift.
Qualifications and Skills
- Education: A Bachelor’s or Associate degree in Nursing (BSc/ANM/GNM).
- Licensure: Current, valid license.
- Experience: Previous bedside nursing experience is essential, often with specialized clinical experience required.
- Key Skills: Strong leadership, decision-making, communication, multitasking, and critical thinking skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Staff Management: Scheduling, training, mentoring, and evaluating staff performance.
- Patient Care Oversight: Monitoring patient care standards, managing discharges/admissions, and resolving complex clinical issues.
- Operational Management: Ensuring compliance with policies, procedures, and safety regulations (e.g., NABH), and managing unit resources/supplies.
- Communication Hub: Serving as the key liaison between doctors, nursing staff, and hospital administration.
- Conflict Resolution: Addressing patient/staff complaints and managing emergencies
Duties & responsibilities:
- She performs all duties and functions of a staff nurse & in addition performs the following functions as well.
- Responsible for overall planning of nursing care of patients and for assignment of patient to nurses working in the ward.
- Rendering direct care to the ill patients & direct assisting the surgeons in major operations
- Ensuring that total health needs of patients are met
- Ensuring nursing standards are maintained throughout the day
- Participating in word rounds with physician, nursing personnel
- Co-ordination of patient-care with other departments of hospital
- Taking over the patients in each shift and reporting to the senior if anything significant
- Ensuring safe environment in the ward
- Prompt reporting of adverse and sentinel events
- Reporting regarding defective equipment and gadgets which are in working conditions
- Reporting failure of supply of electricity, water etc.
- Taking prompt action in any emergency situation arising in the ward and reporting to the appropriate authority
- Ensuring that ward statistics are regularly maintained and submitted
- Interpreting hospital policies and regulation and observing the same
- Co-coordinating and facilitating students teaching
- Programme for new staff
- Participating in in-service education programme
- Providing incidental teaching to patients’ relatives, staff nurses, student nurses and other Group D staff.
- Assisting Asst. Nursing Superintendent in organizing orientation programme for new staff
- Ensure that arrangements are made of assign nurses in emergencies where ever they occur
- Ensures welfare of all patients and provision of special care wherever it is necessary
- Guides her subordinates to maintain a good IPR within the Nursing and other departments.
- Acts as a liaison officer between the Nursing Superintendent and other Nursing personnel
- Organizes staff meeting for ANS, Sisters and Staff Nurses from time to time (e.g. how to take care of the legal aspects, how to take care of the dead body, any change in rules and regulations etc.)
- Helps the warden to maintain the nurses mess and direct her how to take care of the sick nursing personnel
- Assists in physical verification of stock of hospital and department as required
- Deals with the problems and complaints of the nursing staff, the public and Grade-D staff
- Attends the emergency calls of hospital and nurses hostel in the evening and night. She also works in shift duties.
- She actively participates in all quality & accreditation related initiatives of the hospital.

- Guides and counsels Nursing Staff from time to time
- Arrange orientation programme for the new staff
- Ensures clinical experience facilities for students nurses in various department
- Organizes educational programs, facilities to the nursing staff and post-graduate students from different hospitals and colleges
