Senior CNC Programmer – Multi-Axis Milling & Lathe
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Senior CNC Programmer to join our precision machining team. The successful candidate will be responsible for programming complex components for 3-axis, 4-axis, and 5-axis CNC milling machines, along with basic CNC lathe programming in a build-to-print manufacturing environment.
This role requires a strong understanding of machining strategy, tooling, workholding, GD&T, and precision manufacturing. The ideal candidate is someone who can develop efficient, repeatable machining processes while collaborating closely with machinists, setup personnel, and quality teams to achieve exceptional first-pass success.
This position offers the opportunity to work with advanced machining technologies, modern fixturing systems, high-performance cutting tools, and AI-assisted programming workflows in a continuous improvement environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Program CNC milling operations for 3-axis, 4-axis, and 5-axis machining centers using Mastercam and/or Fusion 360.
- Develop CNC programs for basic turning operations on CNC lathes.
- Interpret engineering drawings, CAD models, and GD&T requirements to produce accurate machining programs.
- Create practical machining strategies utilizing 3+2 positioning and simultaneous 5-axis machining where appropriate.
- Develop efficient, reliable, and repeatable machining processes that optimize quality, productivity, cycle time, and tool life.
- Prepare setup sheets, tooling lists, operation sheets, machining notes, and program documentation for production.
- Support machinists and setup technicians during first article inspections, prove-outs, and production launches.
- Troubleshoot machining challenges including tool interference, chatter, tool deflection, chip evacuation, clearance issues, and workholding limitations.
- Recommend improvements in tooling, cutting parameters, fixtures, workholding systems, and programming methodologies.
- Collaborate with Engineering, Manufacturing, and Quality teams to improve machining efficiency and process capability.
- Maintain proper revision control and documentation in accordance with AS9100 quality standards.
- Ensure machining programs comply with engineering specifications and customer requirements.
- Continuously evaluate new manufacturing technologies, CAM strategies, and AI-assisted programming tools to improve productivity.
Required Qualifications
- Diploma, Bachelor's Degree, or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Tool & Die, or a related discipline.
- Minimum 5 years of CNC programming experience in a precision machining environment.
- Strong experience programming 4-axis CNC milling machines.
- Working knowledge of 5-axis CNC machining and programming.
- Experience programming CNC lathes for basic turning operations.
- Proficiency in Mastercam and/or Fusion 360 CAM software.
- Experience with Fanuc and/or Heidenhain CNC control systems.
- Strong understanding of blueprint reading and GD&T.
- Excellent knowledge of machining processes, cutting tools, feeds and speeds, and material behavior.
- Experience developing setup documentation and machining instructions.
- Strong understanding of workholding methods, fixture design, cutting tool selection, and process optimization.
- Ability to troubleshoot machining issues independently.
- Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in an AS9100-certified manufacturing environment.
- Aerospace, defense, medical device, or other high-precision machining experience.
- Experience in high-mix, low-volume production.
- Familiarity with machine-specific post processors for Fanuc and Heidenhain controls.
- Knowledge of AI-assisted CAM programming tools and digital manufacturing technologies.
- Exposure to fixture design and advanced workholding systems.
