JOB DESCRIPTION – MECHANICAL VENDOR DEVELOPMENT ENGINEER

Job Purpose
We are looking for an experienced Mechanical Vendor Development Engineer with 6–10 years of experience in machining, fabrication, vendor development, drawing study, technical discussions, and cost estimation.
The candidate will be responsible for developing and managing mechanical vendors capable of manufacturing precision machined and fabricated components as per engineering drawings, quality requirements, and delivery schedules.
Key Responsibilities
1. Drawing Study & Technical Understanding
- Study and understand mechanical component drawings, assemblies, GD&T, tolerances and specifications.
- Understand machining, fabrication, surface treatment, heat treatment and assembly requirements.
- Identify critical dimensions, special processes and manufacturing challenges from drawings.
- Explain drawings, specifications and manufacturing requirements clearly to vendors.
- Coordinate with the design/engineering team for drawing clarifications and technical issues.
- Suggest manufacturability improvements wherever required.
2. Vendor Development
- Identify, evaluate and develop new vendors for precision machining and fabrication.
- Develop vendors for CNC machining, VMC, HMC, turning, milling, grinding, sheet-metal fabrication, welding and other special processes.
- Assess vendor capability, machinery, manpower, quality systems and production capacity.
- Conduct vendor visits and capability assessments.
- Develop alternate sources for critical components.
- Maintain an approved and qualified vendor database.
3. Costing & Cost Analysis
- Prepare and analyze component-wise manufacturing costing.
- Obtain quotations from vendors and conduct technical/commercial comparisons.
- Analyze raw material cost, machining hours, setup cost, tooling, consumables, labour, overheads, inspection, finishing and transportation.
- Verify whether vendor quotations are technically and commercially reasonable.
- Negotiate prices with vendors based on detailed cost analysis.
- Identify opportunities for cost reduction without compromising quality.
4. Vendor Technical Coordination
- Explain drawings and technical requirements to vendors.
- Discuss manufacturing methods, process planning and inspection requirements.
- Resolve technical queries raised by vendors.
- Coordinate prototype/sample development and first-piece approval.
- Follow up with vendors for development schedules, production and delivery.
- Ensure components are manufactured as per approved drawings and specifications.
5. Machining & Fabrication Knowledge
The candidate should have good practical knowledge of:
- CNC Turning
- VMC / HMC machining
- Milling and drilling
- Grinding
- Precision machining
- Sheet-metal fabrication
- TIG / MIG welding
- Laser cutting
- Bending
- Aluminium, SS, MS and other engineering materials
- Surface treatment / anodizing / plating
- Heat treatment
- Special processes as applicable
- Inspection and measurement methods
6. Quality & Inspection
- Understand dimensional inspection requirements and GD&T.
- Coordinate with vendors for inspection reports and quality documentation.
- Ensure first-off / first-piece inspection before production.
- Support resolution of dimensional and quality issues.
- Coordinate with QA/QC for vendor qualification and component acceptance.
- Monitor recurring vendor quality problems and initiate corrective actions.
7. Commercial & Delivery Coordination
- Compare multiple vendor quotations.
- Negotiate price, lead time, payment terms and delivery schedules.
- Monitor vendor order status and delivery commitments.
- Coordinate with Purchase, Production, Design and Quality teams.
- Ensure timely availability of components for project requirements.
Required Technical Skills
- Strong ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings.
- Good knowledge in engineering tolerances.
- Strong understanding of machining and fabrication processes.
- Practical knowledge of manufacturing cost estimation.
- Vendor identification and development experience.
- Good negotiation and communication skills.
- Ability to independently interact with machine shops and fabrication vendors.
- Knowledge of inspection instruments such as Vernier, Micrometer, Height Gauge, Bore Gauge, etc.
- CAD drawing knowledge is preferred.
Educational Qualification
Diploma / B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering
Experience
6–10 years of relevant experience, preferably in:
- Precision machining
- Aerospace / Defence manufacturing
- Electronics mechanical enclosures
- CNC manufacturing
- Sheet-metal fabrication
- Vendor development / sourcing
- Mechanical component procurement
Preferred Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate should be hands-on and technically strong, rather than purely vendor development -oriented.
He should be capable of:
Drawing → Process Understanding → Vendor Identification → Cost Estimation → Quotation Analysis → Negotiation → Prototype Development → Quality Approval → Production → Delivery
The candidate should be comfortable visiting vendors, discussing drawings directly with machinists/production engineers, identifying manufacturing issues and negotiating realistic manufacturing costs.
