Purpose of the Role
A TPM in the automation industry leads complex, cross‑functional technical programs involving industrial automation systems such as PLC, SCADA, DCS, Robotics, IIoT, MES, and smart manufacturing platforms.
The TPM acts as a bridge between engineering, operations, customers, and leadership, ensuring projects are delivered on time, within scope, and with technical excellence.
Key Responsibilities1. Program & Project Management
- Own end‑to‑end delivery of automation programs (design → development → commissioning → handover)
- Create and manage program schedules, milestones, risk registers, and budgets
- Coordinate multi‑site and multi‑vendor automation projects
- Ensure adherence to industry standards (IEC, ISA, ISO, customer specs)
2. Technical Leadership (Not Just Admin)
- Understand automation architectures:
- PLC/DCS systems (Siemens, Rockwell, ABB, Schneider, etc.)
- SCADA / HMI / MES integration
- Robotics, Vision Systems, Motion Control
- IIoT, Edge Computing, Industry 4.0
- Review technical designs and challenge assumptions
- Resolve technical risks, dependencies, and integration issues
(TPMs are not hands‑on coders but must be technically credible)
3. Cross‑Functional Coordination
- Act as a single point of contact between:
- Automation engineers
- Electrical & Mechanical teams
- IT / OT teams
- Procurement & vendors
- Customer & Site operations
- Align multiple teams around common goals and deadlines
4. Customer & Stakeholder Management
- Interface with customers, plant managers, and OEMs
- Translate business requirements into technical execution plans
- Handle change requests, scope control, and escalation management
- Report program health to leadership (status, risks, cost, timelines)
5. Quality, Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with:
- Functional Safety (SIL, PL)
- Cybersecurity (IEC 62443)
- Factory acceptance tests (FAT)
- Site acceptance tests (SAT)
- Documentation and validation protocols
- Drive continuous improvement and post‑project reviews
