Job Summary -
We are seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Designer (Tool Room Expert) with 8+ years of hands-on experience in designing tooling, jigs, fixtures, gauges, and special-purpose equipment for a manufacturing environment. The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in mechanical design, tool room operations, and product development, preferably within the railway manufacturing sector. The role requires close coordination with production, quality, and engineering teams to develop cost-effective and manufacturable tooling solutions that meet customer and industry standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop jigs, fixtures, gauges, dies, molds, and special-purpose tools for production.
- Prepare detailed 2D drawings and 3D models using CAD software.
- Design tooling for fabrication, machining, welding, assembly, and inspection processes.
- Optimize existing tooling to improve productivity, quality, and manufacturing efficiency.
- Support new product development by designing manufacturable tooling and process solutions.
- Work closely with production, quality, procurement, and maintenance teams during tool development and implementation.
- Conduct design reviews, tolerance stack-up analysis, and engineering calculations.
- Select appropriate materials, standard components, and manufacturing processes.
- Ensure compliance with railway customer specifications, engineering standards, and quality requirements.
- Troubleshoot tooling-related production issues and implement corrective actions.
- Maintain engineering documentation, revision control, BOMs, and design records.
- Coordinate with vendors for tool manufacturing, inspection, and validation.
- Participate in continuous improvement, cost reduction, and productivity enhancement initiatives.
- Mentor junior designers and provide technical guidance to the design team.
Required Qualifications
- Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- Minimum 8 years of experience in mechanical design and tool room operations.
- Experience in manufacturing companies supplying components to the railway, automotive, heavy engineering, or industrial sectors.
- Strong understanding of machining, fabrication, welding, sheet metal, and assembly processes.
- Knowledge of GD&T, tolerance analysis, fits, and manufacturing standards.
- Experience in design validation, prototype development, and production support.
Technical Skills
- Proficient in AutoCAD.
- Hands-on experience with SolidWorks, Creo, CATIA, Inventor, or Siemens NX.
- Strong knowledge of tool design principles.
- Expertise in jigs, fixtures, gauges, and special-purpose machines.
- Understanding of CNC machining, conventional machining, and fabrication techniques.
- Familiarity with ERP systems and engineering documentation.
- Knowledge of ISO 9001, railway quality standards, and engineering documentation practices.
Preferred Experience
- Experience with railway component manufacturing.
- Exposure to welding fixtures, inspection gauges, and assembly fixtures.
- Knowledge of reverse engineering and design optimization.
- Experience in value engineering and cost reduction initiatives.
