Role Summary:
The Team Lead – SQL Server DBA leads a team of database administrators responsible for managing enterprise-grade SQL Server environments across on-premises data centers and Azure IaaS/PaaS platforms. The role combines hands-on technical expertise with team coordination, client interaction, and continuous service improvement responsibilities. The candidate will drive operational excellence and contribute to cloud transformation initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead, mentor, and coordinate a team of 4–8 SQL DBA analysts assign tasks and review outputs.
Serve as technical escalation point for P1/P2 critical database incidents.
Plan and execute SQL Server patching, upgrade, and migration projects end-to-end.
Design and implement HA/DR strategies including Always On AG, log shipping, and Azure geo-redundancy.
Review and approve database change requests conduct peer review of scripts and runbooks.
Conduct weekly/monthly service reviews with clients prepare capacity and performance reports.
Drive root cause analysis (RCA) for major incidents and implement preventive measures.
Define and enforce DBA standards, naming conventions, and security baselines.
Manage on-premises to Azure migration projects — assessment, planning, execution, and hypercare.
Collaborate with application, network, and storage teams for infrastructure design and DR drills.
Identify automation opportunities build PowerShell/T-SQL scripts to reduce manual effort.
Ensure compliance with organizational security and audit requirements.
Technical Skills & Requirements
Deep expertise in SQL Server 2014–2022 administration and performance tuning.
Advanced T-SQL — query optimization, execution plan analysis, index tuning, statistics.
Always On Availability Groups — synchronous/asynchronous replicas, listener configuration, failover.
SQL Server on Azure IaaS — VM series selection, premium SSD, Azure Load Balancer for AG listener.
Azure SQL Managed Instance — managed instance link, business critical vs general purpose tiers.
Azure SQL Database — elastic pools, serverless tier, geo-replication, long-term backup retention.
Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, and Kusto Query Language (KQL) for DB alerting and dashboards.
PowerShell and Azure CLI scripting for automation, VM management, and Azure resource deployment.
Database security — TDE, Always Encrypted, Dynamic Data Masking, Row-Level Security, Azure AD auth.
SSRS, SSIS, and SSAS administration experience preferred.
ITSM process ownership — change management, problem management, and SLA governance.
Azure IaaS & PaaS Administration
Azure IaaS: Manage SQL Server on Azure Virtual Machines — VM sizing, availability sets, proximity placement groups, and Azure site recovery.
Azure PaaS: Administer Azure SQL Database and Azure SQL Managed Instance — elastic pools, service tiers, DTU/vCore sizing.
Configure and monitor Azure Database for SQL MI — failover groups, auto-failover, read replicas.
Manage Azure Storage accounts for database backups — LRS/GRS/ZRS replication, lifecycle policies, soft delete.
Use Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, and Azure Advisor for performance and health insights.
Implement Azure Private Endpoints and VNet service endpoints for secure database connectivity.
Manage Azure Key Vault integration for TDE keys, column encryption, and Always Encrypted.
Configure Azure Backup for SQL on IaaS VMs and Azure SQL Managed Instance backup policies.
Work with Azure NSGs, firewalls, and network topology to ensure secure DB access.
Participate in lift-and-shift and cloud migration projects — assessment, sizing, and post-migration validation.
Certifications (Preferred):
Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate (DP-300) — required.
Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104) — preferred.
MCSA/MCSE SQL Server — preferred.
ITIL Foundation or Practitioner — required.
