Job Description - Quality Head (SMT & Assembly)
Department: Quality Assurance / Quality Control
Reports to: Plant Head / Operations Director
Reportees: Quality Engineers, Line Inspectors, IPQC/IQC/OQC Inspectors, Calibration Coordinator, NPI Quality Engineer
Role Summary
Responsible for end-to-end quality assurance across SMT (Surface Mount Technology) lines and final computer/system assembly, ensuring incoming materials, in-process builds, and finished products meet customer and industry standards (IPC, ISO, customer-specific specs). Drives defect reduction, process control, and continuous improvement across the EMS production floor.
Key Responsibilities
Incoming Quality (IQC)
Oversee incoming inspection of PCBs, components (SMD/THT), mechanical parts, and sub-assemblies
Approve/reject vendor lots based on AQL sampling standards (ANSI/ASQ Z1.4)
Coordinate with SQE (Supplier Quality Engineer) for vendor corrective actions (8D/CAPA)
Monitor incoming material defect trends and supplier scorecards
SMT Line Quality
Ensure SPI (Solder Paste Inspection), AOI (Automated Optical Inspection), and X-ray inspection processes are functioning and calibrated
Monitor solder defect rates (bridging, tombstoning, insufficient solder, cold joints)
Validate reflow oven profiles against IPC-A-610/J-STD standards
Approve First Article Inspection (FAI) for new product introductions on SMT line
Oversee stencil and squeegee quality checks
In-Process Quality (IPQC) - Assembly
Ensure in-process checks at each assembly station (screw torque, cable routing, connector seating)
Functional test (FCT) and ICT (In-Circuit Test) failure analysis coordination
ESD compliance monitoring across SMT and assembly areas
Burn-in/stress test result review for system-level products
Final/Outgoing Quality (OQC)
Final inspection and sampling before dispatch as per customer-approved AQL
Packaging and labeling compliance verification
Coordination of Pre-Shipment Inspection (PSI) for customer/3rd party audits
RMA/field failure analysis and feedback loop to production
Quality Systems & Compliance
Maintain ISO 9001 (and IATF 16949/ISO 13485 if applicable to customer base) compliance
Lead internal audits and coordinate customer/certification body audits
Maintain calibration schedule for all test/measurement equipment
Document control SOPs, work instructions, control plans, FMEA
Customer & Cross-Functional Management
Single point of contact for customer quality escalations
Drive root cause analysis (8D, 5-Why, Fishbone) for customer complaints
Work with NPI/Engineering team for DFM/DFT feedback on new products
Present quality metrics in management review meetings (MRM)
Team & Process Management
Manage and develop quality engineers/inspectors across shifts
Define and monitor quality KPIs (DPPM, FPY, yield)
Drive Lean/Six Sigma/Kaizen initiatives for defect reduction
Training and certification management (IPC-A-610, J-STD-001 operator certification)
Requirements
B.E./B.Tech in Electronics/Electrical/Mechanical or equivalent 10-15+ years in EMS/electronics manufacturing quality, with 4-5+ years in a leadership role Strong knowledge of IPC-A-610, J-STD-001, IPC-7711/7721
Hands-on experience with AOI, SPI, X-ray, ICT/FCT systems
ISO 9001 Lead Auditor certification preferred; Six Sigma Green/Black Belt a plus
Experience handling customer audits (automotive/medical/telecom EMS customers a strong plus)
Pay: ₹30,000.00 - ₹90,000.00 per month
