Reporting To: Nursing Superintendent / Nursing Manager / PICU In-charge
Job Purpose
To lead and supervise the PICU nursing team, ensuring safe, efficient and high-quality care for critically ill paediatric patients. The PICU Team Lead will coordinate clinical activities, support the nursing team, ensure compliance with hospital protocols and maintain high standards of patient safety and family-centred care.
Key Responsibilities1. Clinical & Patient Care
- Supervise and coordinate day-to-day nursing activities in the PICU.
- Ensure safe and evidence-based nursing care for critically ill paediatric patients.
- Monitor patients, identify clinical deterioration and ensure timely escalation to the treating team.
- Ensure proper implementation of physician orders, medication administration and treatment protocols.
- Monitor ventilated patients, invasive lines, drains, monitoring systems and other critical-care equipment.
- Ensure accurate documentation of vital signs, medication, procedures, nursing notes and patient progress.
- Support emergency management, resuscitation and code situations.
2. Team Leadership & Supervision
- Lead, guide and allocate duties to PICU nurses based on patient acuity and workload.
- Conduct shift handovers and ensure effective communication between teams.
- Monitor staff attendance, punctuality, grooming and professional conduct.
- Identify training needs and provide on-the-job coaching to nursing staff.
- Support new staff during induction and competency assessment.
- Promote teamwork, accountability and professional behaviour within the PICU.
3. Quality & Patient Safety
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies, nursing protocols and PICU clinical guidelines.
- Maintain strict infection prevention and control practices.
- Ensure medication safety, correct patient identification and prevention of clinical errors.
- Monitor and report adverse events, near misses and patient-safety incidents.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and clinical audits.
- Support compliance with NABH and other applicable healthcare standards.
4. PICU Operations
- Ensure adequate staffing and effective manpower utilization during each shift.
- Monitor bed availability, admissions, transfers and discharges in coordination with relevant departments.
- Ensure availability and readiness of emergency drugs, consumables and critical-care equipment.
- Check crash carts, emergency equipment and life-support equipment as per schedule.
- Coordinate with doctors, respiratory therapists, laboratory, radiology, pharmacy and other support departments.
5. Documentation & Reporting
- Ensure timely and accurate completion of nursing records and PICU documentation.
- Prepare and submit shift/departmental reports as required.
- Monitor nursing-related quality indicators and identify areas for improvement.
- Escalate operational, clinical and staffing issues to the Nursing Manager/PICU In-charge.
6. Parent & Family Support
- Ensure respectful and compassionate communication with parents and family members.
- Coordinate with the medical team regarding appropriate communication of patient-care information.
- Address routine nursing-related concerns and escalate complaints when required.
- Promote a child- and family-friendly care environment.

Qualification
- B.Sc Nursing / Post Basic B.Sc Nursing / GNM
- Valid Nursing Council registration.
- M.Sc Nursing / Critical Care Nursing qualification is desirable.
Experience
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience in PICU/Pediatric Critical Care.
- Previous experience in a Team Lead / Senior Staff Nurse / PICU In-charge role will be preferred.
- Strong experience in paediatric emergency and critical-care nursing is essential.

Working Conditions
- Shift-based role, including rotational duties, nights, weekends and holidays as required.
- Ability to manage high-acuity and emergency clinical situations is essential.
