Job Summary
The Biomedical Engineer is responsible for the installation, operation, preventive maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, repair, and lifecycle management of medical equipment used throughout the hospital. The role ensures that all medical devices function safely, reliably, and in compliance with applicable statutory requirements, hospital policies, and quality standards, including NABH standards where applicable.
Key Responsibilities Equipment Management
- Install, inspect, commission, and maintain medical equipment in accordance with manufacturer recommendations.
- Perform preventive and breakdown maintenance of biomedical equipment.
- Conduct routine safety checks, functional testing, and calibration of medical devices.
- Ensure optimum availability and performance of critical medical equipment.
- Coordinate equipment installation, relocation, decommissioning, and disposal.
Maintenance and Repairs
- Diagnose equipment faults and perform corrective maintenance.
- Coordinate with equipment manufacturers, authorized service providers, and vendors for warranty services, Annual Maintenance Contracts (AMC), and Comprehensive Maintenance Contracts (CMC).
- Maintain minimum downtime of equipment through timely repairs.
- Verify the quality of repairs performed by external agencies.
Documentation
- Maintain an updated inventory of all biomedical equipment.
- Maintain preventive maintenance schedules, calibration records, breakdown reports, service histories, and equipment logbooks.
- Prepare monthly and annual maintenance reports.
- Maintain documentation required for statutory inspections and NABH accreditation.
Regulatory and Quality Compliance
- Ensure compliance with:
- NABH Standards (where applicable)
- Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) requirements for radiation equipment (in coordination with the Radiation Safety Officer)
- Biomedical Waste Management Rules, 2016 (as applicable to equipment handling)
- Electrical and fire safety regulations
- Hospital infection prevention and control protocols
- Participate in internal and external quality audits.
Procurement Support
- Assist in preparation of technical specifications for procurement of medical equipment.
- Evaluate equipment during procurement.
- Perform acceptance testing before commissioning new equipment.
- Assist in equipment replacement planning and lifecycle management.
User Training
- Train doctors, nurses, and technical staff on safe and proper use of medical equipment.
- Provide guidance on routine care and troubleshooting of equipment.
- Conduct periodic user awareness programs on equipment safety.
Risk Management
- Participate in investigation of equipment-related incidents and adverse events.
- Identify equipment risks and recommend corrective and preventive actions.
- Ensure compliance with electrical safety standards.
Coordination
- Work closely with clinical departments, nursing services, radiology, laboratory, operation theatre, ICU, procurement, and facility management teams.
- Coordinate emergency repairs to ensure uninterrupted patient care.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Engineering, Medical Electronics Engineering, or an equivalent qualification from a recognized university.
Experience
- Fresher: Eligible for entry-level positions.
- Preferred: 2–5 years of experience in a hospital, preferably in a multi-specialty or NABH-accredited hospital.
Skills Required
- Knowledge of biomedical equipment maintenance and calibration.
- Understanding of medical electronics and electrical safety.
- Familiarity with preventive maintenance programs.
- Knowledge of hospital accreditation standards (NABH).
- Good analytical, troubleshooting, and documentation skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
