Job Summary
- We are looking for an experienced AWS RDS DBA / Cloud Database Engineer.
- The candidate should have strong hands-on experience in managing production database workloads on AWS.
- This role requires knowledge of AWS RDS, AWS DMS, database optimization, RDS Proxy, monitoring, backup, migration, and upgrade planning.
- The candidate should not be limited to traditional DBA activities like basic backup, restore, and SQL query writing.
- The person should understand cloud database operations, performance tuning, migration planning, and production troubleshooting.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and maintain AWS RDS database instances for MySQL, PostgreSQL, MariaDB, or SQL Server.
- Handle RDS instance creation, configuration, sizing, storage planning, and maintenance.
- Configure and manage RDS backups, snapshots, point-in-time recovery, and restore testing.
- Work with RDS parameter groups, option groups, subnet groups, security groups, and maintenance windows.
- Monitor database health using AWS CloudWatch, Performance Insights, Enhanced Monitoring, and database logs.
- Troubleshoot production issues such as high CPU, high memory usage, high connections, slow queries, deadlocks, replication lag, and IOPS bottlenecks.
- Perform database performance optimization, including query tuning, index optimization, schema review, and workload analysis.
- Work on AWS DMS-based database migration projects.
- Configure AWS DMS source endpoints, target endpoints, replication tasks, full load, CDC, validation, and cutover planning.
- Plan and execute database migration with minimum downtime.
- Prepare rollback plans for database migration and upgrade activities.
- Implement and manage RDS Proxy for connection pooling and high-traffic applications.
- Configure and maintain RDS Multi-AZ, read replicas, storage autoscaling, and failover readiness.
- Plan low-downtime database upgrades using RDS Blue/Green Deployment or replica-based upgrade approach.
- Evaluate and recommend RDS performance features such as Optimized Writes, Optimized Reads, gp3/io2 storage, provisioned IOPS, and instance class upgrades.
- Work with developers and DevOps teams to improve database performance and application stability.
- Implement database security best practices including encryption, SSL/TLS, least privilege access, Secrets Manager, KMS, and audit logging.
- Prepare database health reports, optimization reports, migration plans, upgrade runbooks, and RCA documents.
Required Skills
- Strong hands-on experience with AWS RDS administration.
- Good understanding of MySQL, PostgreSQL, MariaDB, or SQL Server.
- Experience in database performance tuning and production troubleshooting.
- Hands-on experience with AWS DMS for database migration or replication.
- Knowledge of full load, CDC, replication tasks, migration validation, and cutover planning.
- Experience with RDS snapshots, automated backups, point-in-time recovery, read replicas, and Multi-AZ.
- Good understanding of RDS Proxy and database connection pooling.
- Experience with CloudWatch, Performance Insights, Enhanced Monitoring, alarms, and database logs.
- Knowledge of parameter groups, option groups, subnet groups, VPC, and security groups.
- Ability to troubleshoot slow queries, indexing issues, locks, deadlocks, replication lag, and high connection issues.
- Understanding of RDS Blue/Green upgrade approach and rollback planning.
- Ability to recommend the right solution between query optimization, indexing, storage tuning, instance upgrade, read replica, or RDS Proxy.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
Good to Have Skills
- AWS Certified Database – Specialty certification.
- AWS Solutions Architect certification.
- Experience with Amazon Aurora MySQL or Aurora PostgreSQL.
- Experience with Terraform or CloudFormation for RDS infrastructure automation.
- Knowledge of AWS Secrets Manager, IAM authentication, KMS, and database audit logging.
- Experience with high-traffic SaaS, eCommerce, fintech, healthcare, or enterprise application databases.
- Knowledge of Linux, shell scripting, PowerShell, or Python for DBA automation.
- Experience with SQL Server on AWS RDS.
Candidate Should Know
- How to migrate an on-premise database to AWS RDS using AWS DMS.
- Difference between AWS DMS full load and CDC.
- Difference between Multi-AZ, read replica, snapshot, PITR, and DMS replication.
- When to use RDS Proxy and how it helps in connection-heavy applications.
- How to troubleshoot high CPU, high database connections, slow queries, locks, and IOPS issues in RDS.
- How to plan a low-downtime RDS version upgrade.
- How RDS Blue/Green Deployment works.
- How to create a rollback plan before database migration or upgrade.
- How to use Performance Insights and CloudWatch to identify database bottlenecks.
Minimum Qualification
- 2+ years of experience in database administration or database engineering.
- At least 1–2 years of hands-on production experience with AWS RDS.
- Experience with MySQL, PostgreSQL, MariaDB.
- Experience in database backup, restore, monitoring, troubleshooting, migration, and optimization.
Who Should Not Apply
- Candidates with only local MySQL or SQL Server experience and no AWS RDS exposure.
- Candidates who only know basic backup, restore, and SQL queries.
- Candidates who have not worked on production database troubleshooting.
- Candidates without practical knowledge of AWS RDS, AWS DMS, monitoring, migration, or optimization.
