Description

Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) is a powerful analytical technique that combines the separation capabilities of gas chromatography with the identification and quantification strengths of mass spectrometry. In GC-MS, volatile compounds are vaporized and carried by an inert gas through a column where they are separated based on their chemical properties. The separated compounds then enter the mass spectrometer, which analyses their mass-to-charge ratios, providing detailed information about their structure. This method is widely used in fields such as environmental analysis, food safety, and forensic science due to its sensitivity, specificity, and ability to analyse complex mixtures.

Objectives

What is to learn?

1. Introduction to GC-MS

Overview of chromatography principles and HPLC components (pumps, injectors, columns, detectors).
Key components of a GC-MS system (injector, column, detector, mass analyzer).

2. Instrumentation

Gas Chromatography: Types of columns and their selection.
Mass Spectrometry: Ionization methods and mass analyzers (quadrupole, TOF).
Sample Introduction: Techniques for solid, liquid, and gas samples.

3. GC-MS Method Development
Identification of various target analytes such as:

Pesticides residual analysis of food.
Dioxins/Furans/PCBs in food and environment samples.
Aldrin, ethion, chlorpyriphos, phorate etc.

Practical Applications

1. Hands-On Training

Instrument setup and calibration.
Preparation and analysis of more than 500 samples of various matrices.
Running GC-MS methods.

2. Data Analysis

Understanding mass spectra and chromatograms.
Quantification methods and calibration curves.
Software tools for data processing and reporting.

3. Troubleshooting Common Issues

Resolving baseline noise and ion suppression.
Addressing peak resolution and sensitivity issues.
Preventive maintenance tips for GC-MS systems.
