About the Role
As a Fullstack Engineer (PHP / Laravel), you will contribute to the ongoing modernisation of a high-growth SaaS platform, delivering changes across backend services, front-end features, batch processing, and data analytics. You will play an important role in evolving the platform by helping establish a modern API foundation while supporting pragmatic, iterative improvements to the existing architecture.
Working closely with engineering, product, and hardware teams, you will contribute ideas, take ownership of technical initiatives, and help improve engineering practices, particularly around automated testing and deployment. This role is primarily backend-focused, with approximately 80% of the work centred on backend development and incremental enhancements to the existing frontend.
- Own and implement changes across backend services, batch processing, data analytics, and front-end features.
- Help decouple the backend from the legacy frontend by building a solid API foundation for a modern React-based UI.
- Help define target architectures, balancing pragmatic iterative improvements with larger-scale system changes.
- Improve automated testing, CI/CD, and deployment practices.
- Collaborate with backend, frontend, hardware, and Product teams.
- Take accountability for GDPR, data security, and system security in day-to-day development.
- Contribute backend functionality through existing Laravel Blade components, screens, and widgets.
- Deliver incremental improvements to the existing frontend while maintaining a strong backend focus.
- Take ownership and accountability for assigned projects and technical deliverables.
- Contribute ideas, provide technical opinions, and challenge requirements where appropriate.
- Support the ongoing modernisation of the platform as legacy Lumen services migrate to Laravel.
- Work within a production environment that deploys multiple times each week while maintaining a strong focus on quality.
- 5+ years of professional experience with PHP, including Laravel and modern Laravel versions (v9–12+).
- Strong object-oriented design skills, including SOLID principles, design patterns, and loosely coupled architecture.
- Strong experience with MySQL database design, profiling, and optimisation.
- 2+ years of experience working with a cloud provider such as Google Cloud Platform, AWS, or Azure.
- 2+ years of experience using Docker and containerisation for development and production environments, with exposure to Kubernetes.
- 2+ years of experience with automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, and deployment strategies.
- Experience working across the full stack, with a primary focus on backend development.
- Ability to contribute to API-first backend development supporting modern frontend applications.
- Ability to work independently after onboarding while collaborating closely with cross-functional engineering and Product teams.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the confidence to contribute ideas and technical opinions.
- Willingness to take ownership and accountability for technical projects.
- Commitment to maintaining high standards of quality, security, and data protection in day-to-day engineering work.
- Experience with Google BigQuery.
- Experience with observability and monitoring tools such as New Relic.
- Experience with JavaScript and TypeScript.
- Exposure to Node.js applications.
