Work Schedule: This is a 24/7 on-site role with rotating shifts, including night shifts. The position offers two days off per week, which may not always fall on weekends. Flexibility and adaptability to a continuous shift-based environment are essential. There is no hybrid work arrangement for this position, and it requires working onsite five days a week.
Role Description/Purpose
The Carbon Data Analyst will support the British Council's net zero ambitions through the collection, analysis and reporting of carbon and environmental data across the global organisation. The role will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy, integrity and consistency of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions data and related environmental performance metrics, supporting internal and external reporting requirements. Working closely with colleagues across global offices, procurement, estates, travel and finance, the postholder will provide data-driven insights that enable informed decision-making and support continuous environmental performance improvement.
The role sits within the Environment Team, part of Global Shared Services, and supports the British Council's operations across a global network of over 100 countries. The team plays a key part in delivering the organisation's net zero ambitions, working closely with country offices, procurement, estates, travel and finance colleagues, and alongside the Global Head of Environment, to embed consistent, high-quality carbon and environmental reporting, including reporting aligned with the carbon reduction plan and Greening Government Commitments. Operating in a global, multi-office environment, the role requires strong cultural sensitivity, adaptability and the ability to build effective relationships with dispersed teams and external data providers.
Role Accountabilities
As Carbon Data Analyst, you will play a central role in managing the British Council's carbon and environmental data. You will gather environmental data from country offices, verify it and carry out all necessary data cleansing, before accurately entering it onto the Carbon Data Platform in line with agreed formatting and data entry procedures. You will scrutinise entered data for accuracy and consistency, identifying and resolving any errors or discrepancies with the carbon data platform provider, and will maintain the integrity of the platform by ensuring data remains up to date, well organised and easily accessible.
You will analyse carbon emissions trends and environmental performance data, producing regular dashboards, reports and management information, and will complete carbon and environmental reports and data returns for both internal and external purposes, including the carbon reduction plan and Greening Government Commitments.
You will communicate effectively with international colleagues and data providers, demonstrating cultural sensitivity and adaptability, and will provide guidance, support and engagement opportunities to country offices on environmental reporting requirements, sharing best practice as appropriate. Building strong relationships with Finance, Procurement, Estates, Travel and Digital teams will be key to improving data quality and reporting processes.
You will adhere to all data privacy regulations and maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information, and will grant and manage user access permissions to the carbon data platform based on established user roles and authorisation levels.
In addition, you will assist with the Environment Team email inbox, allocating emails to the correct people and responding to basic queries, and will support the Global Head of Environment with administrative tasks, data, meeting notes and the preparation of PowerPoint presentations for feedback, as well as providing other administrative assistance as required.
Essential Qualifications & Experience
- Graduation (any discipline)
- Understanding of greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting principles and carbon reporting methodologies aligned with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in carbon data analysis and reporting aligned with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Standard
- Proven record of keeping clear and concise notes of any communication
- Proficient with Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Outlook, and AI tools
- Proven record of excellent organisation skills
Candidates should bring hands-on experience of carbon data analysis and reporting, ideally gained in a global or multi-office environment, along with strong analytical skills and the ability to manage multiple processes and IT systems simultaneously. A motivated, self-starting approach, strong attention to detail, and a willingness to develop as the role expands will suit this position well
