Job Responsibilities – Staff Nurse
Experience Required: Minimum 2 Years in a Hospital
Position Summary
The Staff Nurse is responsible for providing safe, ethical, and evidence-based nursing care to patients while maintaining compliance with hospital policies, NABH standards, infection control practices, and nursing protocols. The Staff Nurse shall work under the supervision of the Nursing In-charge and coordinate with the multidisciplinary healthcare team to ensure quality patient care.
Key Responsibilities1. Patient Care
- Provide comprehensive nursing care to assigned patients.
- Perform patient assessment and monitor vital signs.
- Identify changes in patient condition and immediately inform the treating consultant or Medical Officer.
- Develop and implement individualized nursing care plans.
- Maintain patient comfort, dignity, and privacy at all times.
- Ensure patient safety by following established safety protocols.
2. Medication Administration
- Administer medications strictly as per doctor's orders.
- Follow the "Five Rights" of medication administration.
- Verify patient identity before administering medicines.
- Monitor patients for adverse drug reactions and report immediately.
- Maintain accurate medication records.
3. Clinical Procedures
- Assist doctors during examinations and procedures.
- Perform IV cannulation, catheterization, wound dressing, suctioning, oxygen therapy, nebulization, ECG recording, specimen collection, and other nursing procedures as per competency.
- Prepare patients for investigations and surgeries.
- Assist during emergency resuscitation and Code Blue situations.
4. Monitoring & Documentation
- Maintain complete and accurate nursing documentation.
- Record intake-output charts, nursing notes, medication charts, and treatment records.
- Ensure timely documentation in the Hospital Management System (HMS), where applicable.
- Report incidents, medication errors, falls, and near misses as per hospital policy.
5. Infection Prevention & Control
- Follow standard precautions and infection control protocols.
- Maintain hand hygiene compliance.
- Ensure proper segregation and disposal of biomedical waste.
- Use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Participate in infection surveillance activities.
6. Patient Education
- Educate patients and attendants regarding treatment, medication, diet, hygiene, rehabilitation, and discharge instructions.
- Promote preventive healthcare practices.
7. Emergency Responsibilities
- Respond promptly during medical emergencies.
- Assist in CPR and Basic/Advanced Life Support as trained.
- Prepare emergency drugs and equipment.
- Ensure crash cart readiness.
8. Equipment Management
- Check the functionality of medical equipment before use.
- Report malfunctioning equipment immediately.
- Ensure proper handling and maintenance of nursing equipment.
- Maintain adequate stock of consumables in the assigned area.
9. Coordination
- Coordinate with doctors, laboratory, radiology, pharmacy, physiotherapy, housekeeping, biomedical engineering, and other departments.
- Ensure smooth patient transfer within and outside the hospital.
10. Admission, Transfer & Discharge
- Complete admission assessment and documentation.
- Prepare patients for transfer and discharge.
- Provide discharge counselling and medication instructions.
- Ensure proper handover during transfers.
11. Shift Management
- Report punctually for duty.
- Attend shift handovers and communicate important clinical information.
- Ensure continuity of patient care during shift changes.
- Maintain discipline and professional conduct throughout the shift.
12. Quality & NABH Compliance
- Follow all hospital policies, SOPs, and NABH standards.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, audits, and departmental meetings.
- Report patient safety incidents promptly.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information.
13. Professional Conduct
- Demonstrate ethical nursing practice.
- Maintain courteous behaviour with patients, attendants, and colleagues.
- Wear prescribed uniform and identification card while on duty.
- Maintain professional appearance and grooming.
14. Training & Development
- Participate in mandatory hospital training programmes.
- Attend CMEs, workshops, and continuing nursing education sessions.
- Upgrade clinical knowledge and nursing competencies regularly.
15. Additional Responsibilities
- Perform duties assigned by the Nursing Superintendent, Nursing In-charge, Medical Superintendent, or Hospital Management.
- Assist during disaster management drills and mass casualty situations.
- Participate in departmental audits and accreditation activities.
- Support implementation of hospital quality and patient safety initiatives.
