Your role and responsibilities
- The R&D Engineer - 800xA & QCS ensures quality, reliability, and performance of ABB's System 800xA and Quality Control System (QCS) solutions for the Pulp & Paper industry.

This role requires expertise in process control systems, industrial automation, end-to-end system validation, DCS integration, and QCS control strategies.

The incumbent serves as an individual contributor with potential to lead a small testing team, ensuring complete traceability from requirements to validation aligned with ABB quality processes and standards.

Complex system integration, domain-specific QCS validation, balancing manual/automated testing, rapid technology evolution, cross-functional coordination across time zones, maintaining quality under tight deadlines, ensuring traceability and compliance, developing leadership capabilities.

You will be mainly accountable for:

Develop test strategies, plans, and comprehensive test cases for 800xA and QCS solutions

Execute functional, system, integration, regression, and scenario-based testing

Identify, document, and track defects using Azure DevOps

Perform root cause analysis and verify defect fixes through regression testing

Ensure adherence to ABB quality processes
-
Participate in code/design reviews and quality gate assessments
-
Develop and maintain automated test scripts and frameworks
-
Skills in automating test creation and execution with modern tools and technologies

Integrate AI tools into testing

Apply knowledge of pulp & paper process parameters (basis weight, moisture, caliper)

Validate QCS control strategies (CD/MD control, scanner systems, actuators)

Test DCS integration and system behavior under various process conditions
-
Conduct cybersecurity testing aligned with IEC 62443 standards

Validate system integration between System 800xA
-
Verify data flow, alarm management, and historical data archiving

Create test documentation, user manuals, and configuration guides

Collaborate with R&D teams, product managers, commissioning teams, and customers

Support customer demos and participate in Agile ceremonies

Mentor team members and drive continuous improvement initiatives
Qualifications for the role:

Bachelors in Electrical/Instrumentation/Electronics Engineering
-
5-10 years in test engineering for industrial automation, DCS/PLC/SCADA systems, with hands-on System 800xA (AC800M, Control Builder, PPA)

QCS testing experience in pulp & paper or process industries (Preferred)
-
System 800xA architecture, AC800M, Control Builder M, PLC programming (IEC 61131-3)

Testing methodologies: functional, system, integration, regression and simulation

Tools: Azure DevOps, TFS/Git and test automation frameworks
-
Basic Cyber Security understanding
-
ISTQB Foundation Level (Preferred)
