About Kwill
Kwill is the client portal for the world's service businesses — a SaaS platform used by freelancers, small studios, and independent professionals across 40+ countries. We're building the alternative to HoneyBook, Dubsado, and Bonsai. Our team is small, based in Amritsar, with the founding team in Waterloo, Canada. Launching July 2026.
About the Role
We're hiring a Backend Developer Intern to help ship Kwill's API layer, database work, payment integrations, and webhook handlers. You'll work alongside our Backend Developer and directly with the founder — writing real code that handles real user data and real payments, not tutorials.
Kwill is a two-sided B2B SaaS: a freelancer-facing dashboard and a client-facing portal, sharing one Postgres database with Row-Level Security. You'll touch every part of that — from Stripe webhook handlers that mark invoices as paid, to Supabase queries that scope data by tenant, to transactional email flows that deliver proposals and contracts.
Our stack: Next.js 14 (API routes), TypeScript, Supabase (PostgreSQL + RLS), Clerk (auth), Stripe (billing), Resend (email), Vercel. If you've built a couple of full-stack projects — even small ones — you're ready to apply.
Responsibilities
- Build and maintain Next.js API routes for the freelancer dashboard and client portal
- Write Supabase queries scoped by tenant, with proper RLS awareness
- Work on Stripe integrations — checkout, subscriptions, webhooks, refunds
- Handle transactional email flows via Resend (proposal sent, invoice paid, receipt)
- Contribute to database migrations and schema changes
- Write PDF generation flows (proposals, contracts, invoices)
- Debug production issues — read logs, replay webhooks, fix data
- Ship at least one meaningful backend feature per week
Requirements
- Working knowledge of Node.js and TypeScript (or JavaScript with willingness to learn TS)
- Understanding of REST API design — routes, methods, status codes, JSON payloads
- Familiarity with SQL and relational database basics — joins, indexes, foreign keys
- Comfort with async / await, error handling, and promises
- Basic Git workflow — branching, PRs, resolving simple merge conflicts
- Ability to work full-time in Amritsar (in-person, not remote)
- A GitHub profile or 1–2 code samples showing what you can build
Nice to Have
- One or two full-stack projects deployed and running (Vercel, Railway, Fly, etc.)
- Experience with Next.js API routes or serverless functions
- Familiarity with PostgreSQL — queries, migrations, indexes
- Experience with Supabase, Firebase, or another BaaS
- Understanding of authentication flows (JWT, sessions, OAuth)
- Any Stripe integration experience — checkout, webhooks, or payment intents
- Basic understanding of Row-Level Security or multi-tenant architecture
- Any open-source contributions
What We Offer
- Real production backend code shipping to real users from week one
- Direct mentorship from our Backend Developer and weekly 1:1s with the founder
- Full ownership of the features you build — you'll drive them from schema to deploy
- Working hours: Mon–Fri 12:30 PM – 7:30 PM IST, Sat 1:00 PM – 6:00 PM IST
- 1 paid leave day per month plus public holidays
- 3-month probation period
Interview Process
30-minute video call with the founder. Come ready to walk through your GitHub or a project you've built — how you designed the data model, what you'd change, what you struggled with.
