Job responsibilities of RMO/GDMO/Medical Officer
The Resident Medical Officer (RMO) / General Duty Medical Officer (GDMO) / Medical Officer (MO) is responsible for providing continuous medical care to patients, ensuring timely clinical assessment and treatment, coordinating with consultants and multidisciplinary teams, and maintaining high standards of patient safety, quality care, and regulatory compliance.
Key responsibilitiesPatient care and clinical management
- Examine, assess, diagnose, and provide initial medical management for patients in the Emergency Department, ICU, wards, and other clinical areas as assigned.
- Stabilize critically ill patients and initiate emergency treatment in accordance with established clinical protocols.
- Monitor the clinical condition of admitted patients and promptly identify deterioration or complications.
- Perform daily clinical rounds and provide ongoing medical care under the guidance of the treating consultant.
- Implement consultant treatment plans and ensure timely execution of medical orders.
- Respond promptly to medical emergencies, code blue calls, rapid response team activations, trauma cases, and other emergency situations.
- Assist consultants during clinical procedures, surgeries, bedside interventions, and emergency procedures whenever required.
Clinical procedures
- Perform procedures within the scope of practice, including venous access, arterial blood sampling, catheterization, nasogastric tube insertion, suturing, wound care, CPR, airway management, and other emergency interventions.
- Ensure informed consent is obtained and documented where applicable.
- Follow aseptic techniques and infection prevention protocols during all procedures.
Documentation and medical records
- Maintain accurate, complete, timely, and legible medical records.
- Document history, clinical findings, diagnosis, treatment, progress notes, procedure notes, discharge summaries, referral notes, and death summaries.
- Ensure proper documentation of medication orders, investigations, consent forms, and clinical communication.
- Comply with medico-legal documentation requirements and hospital documentation standards.
Coordination with consultants and departments
- Inform the treating consultant promptly regarding significant clinical changes, emergencies, investigation abnormalities, or complications.
- Coordinate with nursing staff, intensivists, anesthetists, surgeons, physicians, and allied health professionals for comprehensive patient management.
- Facilitate timely investigations, referrals, procedures, transfers, and discharge planning.
Emergency and critical care responsibilities
- Provide 24x7 medical coverage during assigned shifts.
- Participate in the management of critically ill patients in ICU, HDU, emergency, and trauma services.
- Perform and lead basic and advanced life support measures as appropriate.
- Ensure timely escalation of care to consultants and senior clinicians.
Medication safety
- Prescribe medications within the authorized scope of practice and hospital policies.
- Verify drug allergies, contraindications, and medication interactions.
- Ensure safe medication administration practices and monitor for adverse drug reactions.
- Report medication errors and adverse drug events through the prescribed reporting system.
Infection prevention and patient safety
- Adhere strictly to infection prevention and control policies, including hand hygiene, isolation precautions, biomedical waste management, and device-related infection prevention measures.
- Report hospital-acquired infections, needle-stick injuries, and other patient safety incidents.
- Participate in patient safety initiatives, incident reporting, root cause analysis, and corrective actions.
Quality, NABH/JCI, and regulatory compliance
- Comply with NABH and/or JCI accreditation standards, clinical protocols, and hospital policies.
- Participate in quality improvement activities, clinical audits, mortality and morbidity meetings, tracer activities, and departmental quality indicators.
- Support clinical governance, patient safety, risk management, and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with applicable medical, ethical, legal, and regulatory requirements.
Communication and patient interaction
- Communicate effectively with patients and their relatives regarding clinical condition, treatment plans, and investigations.
- Provide compassionate, respectful, and patient-centered care.
- Escalate communication to consultants whenever necessary, particularly for critical or sensitive situations.
Academic and professional responsibilities
- Participate in continuing medical education (CME), departmental academic activities, case discussions, journal clubs, and training programs.
- Keep updated with current evidence-based medical practices and hospital clinical guidelines.
- Assist in teaching and supervising interns, junior doctors, and other healthcare staff where applicable.
Shift and administrative responsibilities
- Perform rotational duties, including day shifts, night shifts, weekends, and public holidays as scheduled.
- Ensure proper handover of patient information during shift changes.
- Maintain coordination with hospital administration regarding bed availability, transfers, admissions, and operational requirements.
- Participate in disaster management, emergency preparedness drills, and hospital emergency response activities.
Ethical and professional conduct
- Practice medicine in accordance with the National Medical Commission (NMC) Code of Ethics and professional standards.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and privacy at all times.
- Demonstrate professionalism, integrity, teamwork, and accountability in all clinical and administrative responsibilities.
- Perform any other duties assigned by the Consultant, Head of Department, Medical Superintendent, COO, or Hospital Management in the interest of patient care and hospital operations.

Reports to: Medical Superintendent / Clinical Administration / Concerned Consultant / Head of Department.
Qualifications
MBBS from a recognized medical institution with valid registration with the National Medical Commission (NMC) or the respective State Medical Council. ACLS/BLS certification and experience in emergency medicine, critical care, or hospital practice are desirable.
Pay: ₹60,000.00 - ₹70,000.00 per month
