Job Summary

The Optometrist is responsible for delivering clinical eye care services, teaching optometry students (if in academic role), and supporting vision care diagnostics and rehabilitation. The role involves examining patients for visual disorders, prescribing corrective lenses, assisting in eye disease detection, and ensuring high standards of optical and clinical practice.

Key ResponsibilitiesClinical Duties

Perform comprehensive eye examinations including refraction and vision assessment.
Diagnose common visual problems such as myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia.
Prescribe and dispense corrective lenses, spectacles, and contact lenses.
Detect early signs of ocular diseases (e.g., glaucoma, cataract, diabetic retinopathy) and refer to ophthalmologists.
Conduct specialized tests such as slit-lamp examination, tonometry, visual field testing, and fundus evaluation.
Assist in pre- and post-operative eye care in collaboration with ophthalmology teams.

Academic Responsibilities (If Faculty Role)

Deliver lectures, tutorials, and clinical training sessions in Optometry subjects.
Train students in refraction techniques, optics, ocular anatomy, and clinical procedures.
Prepare lesson plans, practical manuals, and assessment tools.
Supervise clinical postings, internships, and hospital training.
Guide students in case studies, research projects, and seminars.

Patient Care & Counseling

Educate patients on eye health, hygiene, and preventive care.
Counsel patients regarding use and maintenance of eyewear and contact lenses.
Provide guidance on visual ergonomics and occupational eye care.

Equipment & Clinic Management

Operate and maintain optometry instruments and diagnostic equipment.
Ensure calibration and proper functioning of optical devices.
Maintain patient records, prescriptions, and clinical documentation.
Follow infection control and safety protocols in clinical settings.

Research & Professional Development

Participate in research activities related to vision science and optometry.
Publish papers in reputed journals and attend conferences/workshops.
Stay updated with advancements in optical technologies and eye care practices.

Collaboration & Outreach

Work closely with ophthalmologists, healthcare professionals, and hospitals.
Participate in eye camps, community vision screening programs, and outreach activities.
Support public health initiatives related to vision care.

Qualification & ExperienceEssential Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Optometry (B.Optom) or equivalent.
Master’s Degree in Optometry (M.Optom) preferred for academic roles.
Valid registration with relevant optometry council (if applicable).

Preferred Experience

Clinical experience in eye care hospitals or optical clinics.
Teaching experience in optometry colleges (for faculty role).
Experience in vision screening programs and community eye care.

Required Skills

Strong knowledge of ocular anatomy, physiology, and optics.
Expertise in refraction techniques and diagnostic procedures.
Proficiency in handling optometry instruments and equipment.
Good communication and patient counseling skills.
Teaching, mentoring, and research aptitude (for academic roles).
Attention to detail and clinical accuracy.
