Job Summary
The Resident Medical Officer (RMO) is responsible for providing comprehensive medical care to day care and admitted patients, managing medical emergencies, assisting consultants in patient management, ensuring continuity of care, and maintaining high standards of clinical practice. The RMO serves as the first line of medical response within the hospital and works closely with consultants, nursing staff, and allied healthcare professionals to ensure safe, ethical, and evidence-based patient care. RMOs typically provide 247 inpatient and emergency coverage, monitor admitted patients, coordinate with consultants, and maintain accurate documentation in accordance with hospital policies.
Key Responsibilities
A. Clinical Responsibilities
- Assess, diagnose and initiate treatment for admitted patients.
- Perform comprehensive history taking and physical examination.
- Develop preliminary management plans pending consultant review.
- Monitor patient progress and modify treatment as advised.
- Conduct regular ward rounds and document findings.
- Attend emergency calls promptly within the hospital.
- Stabilize critically ill patients until specialist intervention.
- Manage emergency admissions.
- Assist consultants during clinical procedures and surgeries.
- Order appropriate laboratory and radiological investigations.
- Interpret routine investigation reports.
- Prescribe medications according to hospital protocols.
- Perform bedside procedures within competency including:
- IV cannulation
- Central venous access (if trained)
- Foley catheterization
- Ryle's tube insertion
- Suturing
- Wound dressing
- ABG sampling
- Pleural aspiration (if credentialed)
- Ascitic tapping (if credentialed)
- Basic airway management
- CPR and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
B. Emergency & Critical Care
- Respond immediately to Code Blue and medical emergencies.
- Manage emergency cases in casualty and emergency department.
- Perform Basic Life Support (BLS) and ACLS.
- Stabilize trauma patients.
- Manage poisoning, stroke, myocardial infarction, respiratory distress and shock.
- Coordinate referrals to ICU when indicated.
- Assist intensivists in critically ill patient management.
- Ensure timely escalation to consultants.
C. Inpatient Management
- Daily assessment of admitted patients.
- Monitor vital signs and clinical deterioration.
- Review medication charts.
- Review investigation reports.
- Prepare progress notes.
- Coordinate discharge planning.
- Prepare discharge summaries.
- Counsel patients and relatives regarding treatment.
- Ensure continuity of care during shift handovers.
D. Consultant Coordination
- Inform consultants regarding:
- New admissions
- Clinical deterioration
- Emergency situations
- Investigation abnormalities
- ICU transfers
- Implement consultant treatment plans.
- Assist during bedside procedures.
- Assist during OT procedures whenever required.
E. Documentation
Maintain accurate and timely documentation including:
- Admission notes
- Clinical progress notes
- Orders
- Investigation requests
- Procedure notes
- Consent documentation
- Referral notes
- Death summaries
- Medico-legal documentation
- Discharge summaries
Ensure documentation complies with hospital policies, legal requirements, and quality standards.
Infection Prevention & Patient Safety
- Follow NABH standards.
- Maintain infection control practices.
- Adhere to hand hygiene protocols.
- Follow biomedical waste management guidelines.
- Report hospital-acquired infections.
- Report medication errors.
- Participate in patient safety initiatives.
- Maintain patient confidentiality.
- Follow patient identification protocols.
Quality & Compliance
- Comply with NABH accreditation standards.
- Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Participate in clinical audits.
- Participate in mortality and morbidity meetings.
- Ensure medication safety.
- Report adverse events.
- Participate in quality improvement projects.
Communication Responsibilities
- Communicate effectively with consultants.
- Coordinate with nursing staff.
- Liaise with laboratory and radiology departments.
- Communicate with pharmacy.
- Counsel patients and family members.
- Participate in multidisciplinary meetings.
- Maintain professional behaviour at all times.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Ensure smooth shift handover.
- Maintain ward discipline.
- Verify patient records.
- Monitor availability of emergency drugs.
- Ensure crash cart readiness.
- Report equipment malfunction.
- Coordinate patient transfers.
- Participate in hospital committees whenever assigned.
Medico-Legal Responsibilities
- Handle Medico-Legal Cases (MLC) according to hospital protocol.
- Inform police authorities where applicable.
- Maintain proper documentation.
- Ensure informed consent.
- Preserve medical records.
- Maintain confidentiality.
Required Qualifications
Essential
- MBBS/BAMS/BHMS from a recognized medical college.
- Permanent registration with the National Medical Commission (NMC) or State Medical Council.
- Completion of compulsory rotating internship.
Preferred
- Certificate in ACLS.
- Certificate in BLS.
- ATLS certification (preferred).
- Experience in ICU, Emergency, or Casualty.
Experience
- 01 to 03 years of experience in a multi-speciality hospital.
