Job Summary
The Consultant – Obstetrics & Gynecology is responsible for providing comprehensive medical and surgical care to women across all stages of life, including antenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, and gynecological care. The consultant will diagnose and manage obstetric and gynecological conditions, perform surgeries, ensure safe maternal and fetal outcomes, and contribute to quality improvement initiatives within the department.
Key ResponsibilitiesClinical Responsibilities
- Provide outpatient and inpatient consultation for obstetric and gynecological patients.
- Manage normal and high-risk pregnancies, including antenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum care.
- Conduct normal vaginal deliveries, assisted deliveries, and cesarean sections.
- Diagnose and treat gynecological disorders, including menstrual disorders, infertility, pelvic pain, fibroids, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, and menopause-related conditions.
- Perform gynecological surgeries, including hysterectomy, laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, myomectomy, ovarian cystectomy, and other procedures as per expertise.
- Manage obstetric and gynecological emergencies such as postpartum hemorrhage, ectopic pregnancy, eclampsia, and obstetric trauma.
- Interpret laboratory investigations, ultrasound reports, and other diagnostic findings.
- Counsel patients regarding pregnancy, contraception, fertility, reproductive health, menopause, and preventive women's healthcare.
- Coordinate referrals to specialists when required.
Patient Safety & Quality
- Ensure adherence to evidence-based clinical practices and hospital protocols.
- Maintain infection prevention and control standards.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, clinical audits, and departmental meetings.
- Report adverse events and ensure compliance with patient safety policies.
Documentation
- Maintain accurate and timely medical records.
- Prepare admission notes, operative notes, discharge summaries, consent forms, and clinical documentation.
- Complete medico-legal documentation when applicable.
- Ensure compliance with statutory and regulatory documentation requirements.
Teaching & Collaboration
- Work collaboratively with neonatologists, anesthesiologists, pediatricians, nursing staff, and other specialists.
- Supervise junior doctors, residents, interns, and nursing staff where applicable.
- Participate in continuing medical education (CME), departmental teaching, and research activities.
Qualifications
- MBBS from a recognized medical institution.
- MD/MS/DNB in Obstetrics & Gynecology from a recognized institution.
- Valid registration with the National Medical Commission (NMC) or State Medical Council.
Experience
- Minimum 2–5 years of post-qualification experience as a Consultant or Specialist in Obstetrics & Gynecology (experience requirements may vary based on hospital policy).

Working Conditions
- Outpatient clinics, inpatient wards, labor room, operation theatre, and emergency services.
