Job Post: Geotechnical Engineer – IoT Instrumentation & Monitoring
Company: Techavo Systems
Location: Kolkata / Remote / Site Visits as required
Position Type: Full-time / Consultant
Experience: 3–8 years preferred
About the Role
Techavo Systems is entering the field of geotechnical IoT instrumentation and deformation monitoring for applications such as landslide detection, rockfall monitoring, tunnel portal monitoring, slope movement monitoring, retaining wall monitoring and structural deformation analysis.
We are looking for a Geotechnical Engineer who can guide our hardware, software and analytics team in developing practical monitoring solutions for real field conditions.
Key Responsibilities
Study project requirements related to landslides, rockfall zones, tunnel portals, slopes, retaining walls and protection structures.
Identify suitable geotechnical instruments such as tiltmeters, crack meters, extensometers, piezometers, inclinometers, strain gauges, earth pressure cells, rain gauges and rock movement sensors.
Prepare instrumentation plans for deformation monitoring, including proposed instrument locations in plan view and cross-section.
Support site assessment activities including inspection of slope conditions, shotcrete cracks, seepage, drainage channels, retaining walls, protection walls and existing stabilization measures.
Define monitoring parameters such as displacement, tilt, crack movement, pore water pressure, rainfall, vibration, settlement and structural movement.
Help define threshold values, alert levels and risk categories such as Normal, Watch, Warning and Critical.
Work with the IoT hardware and software team to convert geotechnical requirements into sensor, data logger, gateway and cloud dashboard specifications.
Review sensor data and support development of analytics logic for trend analysis, deformation rate, rainfall correlation and early-warning prediction.
Assist in field installation methodology, instrument mounting, baseline reading, calibration and validation.
Prepare technical reports, monitoring plans, site observation notes, instrumentation drawings and client-facing documentation.
Coordinate with drone survey, photography, satellite image and mapping teams for portal/slope area documentation.
Support pilot deployments and validate whether the monitoring data is technically meaningful from a geotechnical perspective.
Required Skills
Knowledge of slope stability, rockfall, landslide, tunnel portal and retaining wall behaviour.
Understanding of geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring methods.
Familiarity with instruments such as inclinometers, piezometers, extensometers, tiltmeters, crack meters, strain gauges and settlement markers.
Ability to read site drawings, cross-sections, geological/geotechnical reports and survey layouts.
Experience in field inspection, site assessment or instrumentation planning.
Ability to define monitoring logic, risk levels and alert criteria.
Good technical documentation and reporting skills.
Basic understanding of IoT-based monitoring systems will be an added advantage.
Preferred Experience
Tunnel portal monitoring
Landslide or slope monitoring
Rockfall protection projects
Road, railway, hydropower or mining geotechnical projects
Instrumentation layout planning
Deformation monitoring reports
Drone/survey-based site documentation
Working with contractors, consultants or government infrastructure projects
What We Offer
Opportunity to work on a new geotechnical IoT product line.
Collaboration with hardware, firmware, cloud and analytics teams.
Involvement in real-time monitoring and early-warning systems.
Long-term opportunity in landslide, rockfall and infrastructure safety monitoring.
Flexible engagement as full-time, consultant or project-based expert.
