Job Description: Quality Control Manager (Fasteners)
Job Summary
We are seeking a highly precise, technical Quality Control Manager to lead the quality department at our fastener manufacturing facility. You will oversee the inspection and testing of high-strength fasteners from raw wire rod intake through cold/hot forging, thread rolling, heat treatment, and surface plating. The ideal candidate has deep expertise in metallurgical testing, dimensional metrology, and the specific compliance standards governing the fastener industry.
Core Responsibilities
- Dimensional Inspection: Oversee first-piece, in-process, and final inspections using micrometers, calipers, thread ring/plug gauges, optical comparators, and automated vision sorting systems.
- Metallurgical & Mechanical Testing: Manage laboratory testing for tensile strength, proof load, hardness (Rockwell/Vickers), microstructural analysis, torque, and hydrogen embrittlement.
- Traceability & Compliance: Ensure 100% batch traceability from the original steel mill heat number down to the finished product shipped to the customer.
- Industry Standards Enforcement: Guarantee full compliance with fastener standards including ASTM, ASME, SAE, ISO, DIN, and IATF 16949 (for automotive fasteners) or AS9100 (for aerospace).
- Heat Treat & Plating Validation: Audit and validate critical secondary processes—such as heat treatment cycles and electroplating/coating thicknesses (zinc, phosphate, etc.)—to prevent hydrogen embrittlement and corrosion failures.
- Defect Root-Cause Analysis: Lead the containment and root-cause analysis for any dimensional or mechanical failures using 8D, 5-Why, and Fishbone methodologies.
- PPAP & Documentation: Coordinate the preparation and submission of Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) documentation, Material Test Reports (MTRs), and Certificates of Conformance (CoC).
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Experience: 5+ years of experience in a cold-heading, forging, or fastener manufacturing environment, with at least 2 years in a quality management or supervisory role.
- Technical Expertise: Comprehensive understanding of thread profiles, pitch diameters, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), and steel chemistry/heat-treatment profiles.
- Certifications: Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) or Certified Quality Manager (CQM) through ASQ is highly preferred. Six Sigma Green or Black belt is a plus.
- Software: Proficiency with Quality Management System (QMS) software, Statistical Process Control (SPC) software, and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems.
