We are seeking an experienced Product Designer with technical expertise in 3D CAD modeling, plastic components and mold dynamics. In this role, you will bridge the gap between creative concept generation and production-ready manufacturing. You will own the design process from initial surfacing and solid modeling through Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and tooling sign-off.
Key Responsibilities
- Concept & Surface Modeling: Translate sketches and design requirements into high-quality 3D CAD models, using Class-A surfacing techniques for smooth, ergonomic aesthetic forms.
- Plastic Design & DFM: Engineer complex plastic enclosures and mechanical parts while applying strict DFM principles (draft angles, wall thickness consistency, ribs, bosses, snap fits, and parting line placement).
- Mold & Tooling Integration: Collaborate directly with tooling engineers and mold makers to evaluate draft, core/cavity splits, runner placement, ejection systems, and shrinkage factors.
- Multi-CAD Workflow Management: Utilize appropriate CAD packages based on project phase—leveraging Rhino for organic forms, SolidWorks/Fusion 360 for mechanical assemblies, and Siemens NX for high-end surfacing or complex tooling setups.
- Prototyping & Validation: Create rapid prototypes (3D printing, CNC mockups) to validate form, fit, and mechanical function prior to steel cutting.
- Documentation & Handoff: Prepare complete 2D engineering drawings with GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing), bill of materials (BOM), and step files for manufacturing partners.
Technical Qualifications & SkillsCAD Expertise
- SolidWorks: Advanced parametric solid and surface modeling, assembly management, and drawing creation.
- Rhino 3D: Advanced Class-A NURBS surfacing, organic form generation, and rapid conceptualization.
- Siemens NX: High-end surfacing, complex parametric geometry, or mold design workflows.
- Autodesk Fusion 360: Generative design, rapid iteration, and surface/mesh sculpting.
Manufacturing & Engineering
- Plastic Injection Molding: Deep understanding of resin selection (ABS, PC, PP, Nylon, etc.), shrinkage rates, mold flow analysis, and defect mitigation (sink marks, warp, weld lines).
- Mold Making Knowledge: Clear understanding of 2-plate/3-plate molds, side actions, lifters, hot runners, and EDM processes.
- GD&T: Strong ability to apply and interpret engineering tolerances.
