Job Summary
The PD Merchant is responsible for managing the complete product development process from receiving buyer inquiries until sample approval. The role requires coordination with buyers, design, sampling, sourcing, production, and quality teams to ensure timely development of garments that meet buyer specifications, quality standards, and target costs.
Key ResponsibilitiesProduct Development
- Receive buyer enquiries, tech packs, and development requests.
- Analyze buyer requirements and prepare development plans.
- Coordinate with the design and sampling teams for prototype development.
- Ensure timely sample submissions according to the buyer's Time & Action (T&A) calendar.
- Maintain records of all development stages.
Buyer Coordination
- Communicate with international buyers regarding developments, comments, approvals, and revisions.
- Clarify technical specifications and product requirements.
- Share sample status and development updates.
Fabric & Trim Sourcing
- Coordinate with fabric and trim suppliers for development materials.
- Source new fabrics, trims, prints, embroidery, and washes as per buyer requirements.
- Follow up for approvals and delivery timelines.
Costing
- Prepare preliminary garment costing.
- Coordinate with sourcing and production teams for cost optimization.
- Ensure target FOB prices are achieved.
Sample Management
- Coordinate development of:
- Proto Samples
- Fit Samples
- Size Set Samples
- Salesman Samples
- Pre-Production (PP) Samples
- Photo Samples
- Shipment Samples
- Track sample approvals and maintain records.
Cross-Functional Coordination
- Work closely with:
- Design Team
- Sampling Department
- Fabric Department
- Purchase Team
- QA Team
- Production Team
- Resolve development-related issues quickly.
Documentation
- Maintain buyer tech packs and development files.
- Update Time & Action (T&A) plans.
- Prepare BOM (Bill of Materials).
- Maintain costing sheets and approval records.
- Generate sample tracking reports.
Compliance & Quality
- Ensure products comply with buyer quality standards.
- Follow company SOPs and buyer compliance requirements.
- Coordinate with QA during development.

Educational Qualification

Experience
- 2–6 years of experience as a PD Merchant in a garment export house.
- Experience with woven, knit, or fashion apparel product development is preferred.
