A shadow teacher is a specialized para-educator who works one-on-one with a child with learning differences, developmental disabilities, or ADHD in a mainstream classroom. They provide academic support, manage behaviors, foster social interaction, and assist the student in achieving their Individual Education Plan (IEP) goals, aimed at fostering independence.
Key Responsibilities
- Individualized Support: Adapt teaching methods and classroom materials to meet the specific learning needs of the child.
- Behavior Management: Implement positive behavioral strategies to help the student remain focused, engaged, and organized.
- Social & Academic Integration: Promote positive interactions with peers and aid the student in keeping up with lessons without replacing the main teacher.
- Monitoring & Reporting: Maintain daily progress records, track IEP goals, and collaborate with parents, teachers, and therapists (e.g., occupational therapists).
- Fostering Independence: Gradually reduce support to encourage the student to function independently within the classroom setting.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Education: Typically requires a bachelor’s degree, often in education, psychology, or special education, though some roles require only a high school diploma with relevant experience.
- Experience: Previous experience working with children, especially those with special educational needs (SEN).
- Skills: Patience, empathy, adaptability, strong verbal/written communication, and the ability to work under the direction of a SEN lead.
- Certifications: While not always required, training in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) or a specialized shadow teacher certification is preferred.
Pay: ₹12,000.00 - ₹22,000.00 per month
