Role: Test Leader – MCU (Motor Contol Unit)
The Motor Control Unit (MCU) Test Leader is responsible for leading the validation & verification activities of electric drive motor controllers used in battery-electric and hybrid vehicles. The role includes test planning, test execution, issue management, and coordinating a team of test engineers.
The MCU Test Leader ensures the motor controller meets performance, durability, safety, and regulatory requirements across inverter, motor control algorithms, power electronics, diagnostics, and communication interfaces.
Key Responsibilities
1. Test Planning & Strategy
- Create complete test plans for MCU (inverter + motor controller) covering functional, performance, safety, and durability requirements.
- Define test procedures, KPIs, and acceptance criteria in alignment with system & software requirements.
- Ensure requirement traceability using DOORS, Polarion, or equivalent tools.
- Identify testing needs: HIL, SIL, dyno testing, bench testing, vehicle testing.
2. Execution & Leadership
- Lead and mentor a team of MCU test engineers/technicians.
- Oversee testing of:
- Motor control algorithms (FOC, vector control, torque control).
- Inverter switching logic & power electronics behaviour.
- PWM generation, modulation schemes, current & voltage control.
- Thermal performance under various load conditions.
- Coordinate dyno testing, endurance testing, and stress testing of MCU.
- Ensure proper setup of HV/LV test benches, instrumentation, and safety compliance.
3. Technical Responsibilities
- Validate torque accuracy, response time, efficiency, thermal behaviour, and fault response.
- Execute safety tests for HV systems, isolation checks, short-circuit behaviour, and de-rating algorithms.
- Test communication interfaces (CAN, LIN, diagnostics, UDS services).
- Work with tools such as CANalyzer, INCA, MATLAB/Simulink, ETAS, dSPACE systems, PLECS.
- Analyse log files, switching waveforms, and motor control signals using oscilloscopes and data loggers.
4. Issue Tracking & Reporting
- Identify defects and log issues (Jira, ALM, or internal tools).
- Drive RCA activities with software, hardware, and system design teams.
- Prepare reports: performance summaries, issue dashboards, test coverage, compliance reports.
- Track KPIs such as defect detection rate, test execution progress, and validation completeness.
5. Cross-functional Collaboration
- Work closely with:
- Software development teams (control algorithms, embedded SW).
- Power electronics hardware team.
- Motor design team.
- Vehicle integration team.
- Functional safety and reliability teams.
- Support homologation and compliance testing (AIS, ISO 21434, ISO 26262 for ASIL requirements).
- Coordinate external lab testing (thermal chambers, EMC labs, third-party validation partners)..
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Power Electronics, Automotive, or related fields.
- 5–12+ years in Power Electronics / MCU testing.
- 2+ years in a test leadership or team-coordination role.
- Strong leadership and project coordination abilities.
- Analytical thinking and structured problem-solving.
- Experience with automotive MCUs used in BEV/PHEV applications.
- Hands-on experience with dSPACE HIL systems.
- Knowledge of thermal runaway prevention strategies.
- Working experience with motor calibration and tuning.
- Exposure to
- Deep understanding of motor control fundamentals:
- Field Oriented Control (FOC), sensorless control, torque control
- Position/speed estimation algorithms
- PMSM/BLDC machine behavior
- Strong knowledge of inverter hardware: IGBTs/MOSFETs/gate drivers, DC link behavior, Overcurrent/overvoltage/thermal protection
- Experience in dyno operations and HV testing setups.
- Hands-on experience with CAN, UDS diagnostics, and power analyzer tools.
- Familiarity with standards: ISO 26262 (Functional Safety)/ISO 21434 (Cybersecurity)/IEC-ISO HV safety standards/ EMC-EMI testing of power electronics.
