Job summary:
The Turning Machinist is responsible for operating and setting up CNC and conventional turning machines to
produce precision components as per engineering drawings and specifications. This role involves selecting
appropriate tools, setting machining parameters, performing in-process inspections, and ensuring adherence to
quality, safety, and productivity standards. The machinist contributes to efficient production by minimizing
downtime, optimizing processes, and maintaining equipment in good working condition.
Key Responsibilities
1. Machining Planning:
2. Analyses work orders, blueprints, engineering plans, material specifications, drawings, reference planes, surface
locations, and machining parameters. Interprets Geometric Dimensions and Tolerances (GD&T) to ensure precision
machining.
3. Adhere to machine-level planning by analyzing route cards, blueprints, engineering plans, material specifications, and
drawings. Interpret geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T) to define reference planes, surface locations, and
machining parameters, ensuring precision and accuracy in machining operations.
4. CNC Programming: Creates 2D programs for mills and lathes, including defining zero/reference points, setting tool
registers, applying offsets and compensation, and utilizing conditional switches. Performs calculations using basic
math, geometry, and trigonometry. Validates and proves part programs.
5. Machine Setup: Installs and adjusts 3-jaw and 4-jaw chucks, tools, attachments, collets, bushings, special fixtures, and
indicating Vises for optimal machine setup.
6. Operational Verification: Ensures correct settings by measuring positions, inspecting first-run parts and sample
workpieces, and maintaining strict adherence to safety standards.
7. Equipment Maintenance: Conducts preventive maintenance as per manufacturer guidelines, troubleshoots issues,
and coordinates repairs to ensure optimal equipment uptime.
8. Shift Handover: Maintains continuity between shifts through clear documentation and communication of work
progress, issues, and follow-up actions.
9. Documentation: Completes production and quality logs to maintain accurate records of actions taken and ensure
traceability.
