We are looking for a Market & Community Research Intern who is curious about the internet, enjoys finding interesting conversations, and can turn online discussions into actionable opportunities for the team.
Selfhost.dev is a managed backend infrastructure platform, where developers and teams can run their entire backend, their databases, and applications from one dashboard without managing servers themselves. In simple terms, we give developers fully managed database services, and also provide them the simplicity to deploy & host their apps, cache services and more with a transparent pay-as-you-go pricing.
In this role, you’ll spend your time researching conversations across platforms such as Reddit, LinkedIn, X, forums, developer communities, and other online channels to identify people and teams actively discussing problems that SelfHost can solve.
You’ll help us discover relevant conversations early, understand what people are looking for, and identify opportunities where our team can genuinely contribute to the discussion.
What you'll do
- Monitor Reddit, LinkedIn, X, developer communities, forums, and other online platforms for relevant conversations.
- Search for people discussing problems, challenges, or requirements related to databases, PostgreSQL, cloud infrastructure, hosting, DevOps, backend development, and related technologies.
- Identify high-intent conversations where SelfHost could potentially be useful.
- Maintain a structured list of relevant posts, conversations, users, companies, and opportunities.
- Research the context behind each conversation to understand what the person is actually looking for.
- Share relevant conversations with the team along with a brief summary of the opportunity.
- Where appropriate, participate in conversations through thoughtful, useful, and non-spammy comments.
- Track responses and engagement from conversations we participate in.
- Identify recurring questions, pain points, and trends across communities and share insights with the product and marketing teams.
- Continuously experiment with new search queries, platforms, communities, and ways of discovering relevant conversations.
- Build and maintain a simple research database or tracker of findings and opportunities.
You'll be a fit if
- You are naturally curious and enjoy exploring the internet to find information others might miss.
- You have strong research and information-finding skills.
- You know how to use Google, Reddit, LinkedIn, X, forums, and other online communities effectively.
- You can recognize when an online conversation represents a genuine problem or potential opportunity.
- You have strong written communication skills and can write clear, contextual, and human-sounding comments.
- You are comfortable working independently with minimal supervision.
- You are organized and can maintain structured research and tracking.
- You pay attention to details and can distinguish meaningful conversations from irrelevant noise.
- You have an interest in technology, SaaS, developer tools, cloud infrastructure, or startups.
- You are willing to learn technical concepts and understand the problems our customers face.
Nice to have
- Familiarity with Reddit communities, LinkedIn, X, Hacker News, GitHub, Stack Overflow, or developer forums.
- Basic understanding of PostgreSQL, databases, AWS, cloud infrastructure, DevOps, or developer tools.
- Experience with market research, lead research, community management, social listening, or business research.
- Experience using tools such as Google Sheets, Notion, Airtable, or similar research/tracking tools.
- Previous experience identifying leads, prospects, or business opportunities through online research.
- A genuine interest in the startup and developer ecosystem.
