Role Overview
The Design Manager India leads Schneider Electrics design team based in Mumbai, delivering products for India‑for‑India and India‑for‑Global markets.
This is a hands‑on leadership role within the Corporate Design & Ergonomics function. The role combines design leadership, people management, technical stewardship, and program oversight, with accountability for both creative excellence and operational execution.
The Design Manager will lead and develop the Mumbai design team designing across hardware and software products, drive innovation, and ensure consistent, high‑quality delivery across complex, multidisciplinary programs.
Key Responsibilities
Design Leadership & Strategy

Lead the Mumbai Design Lab, setting clear direction aligned with Schneider Electric’s brand, business strategy, and global design principles.

Express and defend a clear point of view on design and brand strategy.

Translate user needs, technical constraints, brand attributes, and business objectives into compelling, manufacturable products and digital experiences

Inspire multidisciplinary teams through demonstrated design leadership and hands‑on contribution.
Program & Operational Management
-
Centralise and oversee all design projects for Schneider Electric’s Mumbai design team.

Manage multiple complex, cross‑functional programs in parallel, ensuring quality, timelines, and budgets are met.

Coordinate deliverables, schedules, resources, and budgets across internal teams and external partners.

Act as the technical single point of contact for design across the product lifecycle.

Anticipate project risks and next steps, ensuring clear and continuous communication between Business Units, R&D, marketing, and external agencies.
External Agency & Ecosystem Management

Select, brief, and manage external design agencies.

Oversee design work produced externally, ensuring full compliance with Schneider Electric brand design rules and charters.

Evaluate costs, optimise budgets, and ensure strong return on design investment.

Pilot design prospecting through design schools, universities, and design centres.
People & Capability Management

Recruit, lead, and develop the Mumbai design team.

Set objectives and conduct annual performance evaluations in line with HR processes.

Animate and stimulate team creativity using the design charters and shared methodologies.

Foster collaboration and knowledge sharing across global design labs.

Contribute to and help organise global design seminars and regional “Design Days.”
Innovation & Design Management
You will:

Lead a design team, driving innovation, delivery excellence, and continuous improvement.

Manage competencies, methodologies, and processes to enhance execution efficiency.

Stay ahead of emerging technologies, tools, and design practices, aligning them with business needs.

Make independent decisions and recommendations impacting costs, processes, and operational performance.

Address complex, non‑recurring problems, often defining new processes and ways of working.
Required Profile
Experience & Background
-
Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design or equivalent from a recognised design school.

8+ years of experience, preferably in consumer electronics or industrial equipment.

Proven experience leading both digital and physical design teams and complex design programs.

Strong balance of aesthetic sensitivity and technical culture.

Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and product development cycles.

Ability to manage the interface between visual design, engineering, and functional requirements.
