Job Summary
The Lead Veterinary Assistant is responsible for supporting and supervising the daily functioning of the veterinary assistant team while ensuring smooth clinical operations, patient comfort, hygiene standards, and workflow coordination within the clinic. This role combines hands-on clinical assistance with leadership responsibilities, including team guidance, task allocation, operational monitoring, and maintaining high standards of patient care and discipline.
The Lead Veterinary Assistant acts as a bridge between veterinary assistants, doctors, and front office staff to ensure efficient case flow and a stress-free experience for pets and pet parents.
Key Responsibilities1. Patient Handling & Clinical Assistance
1.1. Assist in safely handling, restraining, and supporting pets during consultations, diagnostics, treatments, and procedures.
1.2. Guide junior veterinary assistants in proper patient handling techniques and fear-free restraint methods.
1.3. Ensure patient comfort, cleanliness, and safety before, during, and after clinical procedures.
1.4. Support veterinarians and technicians during examinations, minor procedures, diagnostics, and recovery monitoring.
1.5. Immediately escalate any patient discomfort, abnormal behavior, or emergency concern to the veterinary team.
2. Team Supervision & Coordination
2.1. Supervise day-to-day activities of veterinary assistants and allocate responsibilities effectively.
2.2. Ensure proper shift coordination, punctuality, discipline, grooming, and workflow adherence among assistants.
2.3. Train and mentor newly joined veterinary assistants on clinic protocols, patient handling, hygiene practices, and workflow expectations.
2.4. Monitor team productivity and report operational concerns or staffing issues to management.
2.5. Ensure smooth coordination between doctors, technicians, reception, housekeeping, and support staff.
3. Clinical Room Management & Hygiene
3.1. Ensure all consultation rooms, treatment areas, cages, and OPD sections are clean, sanitized, and operationally ready.
3.2. Monitor cleaning schedules and infection control practices across clinical areas.
3.3. Ensure clinical consumables, disposables, and basic supplies are adequately stocked and organized.
3.4. Assist in maintaining biomedical waste disposal standards as per clinic protocols.
4. OPD & Procedure Support
4.1. Coordinate preparation of instruments, consumables, medications, and forms required for procedures and consultations.
4.2. Provide assistance during minor procedures, wound care, medication administration, and patient preparation under veterinary supervision.
4.3. Ensure proper workflow during busy OPD hours and assist in managing patient movement efficiently.
4.4. Support doctors and technicians during emergencies and high-case-load situations.
5. In-Patient & Post-Operative Care
5.1. Monitor cage management activities including feeding, cleaning, bedding, and patient comfort.
5.2. Assist in post-operative monitoring and ensure recovery area cleanliness and readiness.
5.3. Ensure admitted pets receive timely supportive care as instructed by the veterinary team.
5.4. Report any abnormal recovery signs immediately to the supervising doctor or technician.
6. Administrative & Operational Support
6.1. Maintain basic treatment logs, patient movement records, and operational checklists where required.
6.2. Ensure compliance with clinic SOPs, hygiene protocols, and patient safety standards.
6.3. Assist management in implementing workflow improvements and operational discipline.
6.4. Participate actively in team meetings, audits, training sessions, and safety drills.
Qualifications and Skills
- Minimum: Veterinary Assistant certification or diploma in animal care/veterinary support.
- Minimum 2–4 years of hands-on veterinary assistant or animal handling experience.
- Prior experience in supervising or guiding support staff preferred.
- Strong understanding of animal handling and clinical hygiene practices.
- Ability to manage stressful situations calmly and professionally.
- Good communication and leadership skills.
- Physically fit to handle pets, cages, and clinical movement requirements.
- Passionate about animal welfare and patient care.
- Willingness to work in rotational shifts, weekends, and emergencies.
