We are looking for a Freelance Research Assistant to support the development and experimental validation of an advanced drone detection, identification, Remote ID association, and threat assessment system.
The candidate will work on Computer Vision, Machine Learning, Signal Processing, sensor fusion, and research experimentation, contributing to Q1 journal publications and doctoral research.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and test computer vision and machine learning algorithms for drone detection, tracking, and identification.
- Implement visual-track to Remote ID matching and association.
- Support authorized challenge-response verification and identification workflows.
- Develop dynamic threat-assessment and risk-classification models.
- Work with synchronized video, Remote ID/UTM, and ground-truth datasets.
- Design and execute controlled experiments and benchmark evaluations.
- Perform statistical analysis, uncertainty estimation, and model evaluation.
- Build reproducible datasets, experiment pipelines, and evaluation scripts.
- Maintain clean, version-controlled code and detailed experiment documentation.
- Prepare research figures, tables, analysis, and technical documentation for Q1 journal publications and doctoral dissertation chapters.
- Follow research, privacy, safety, spectrum, and security-testing requirements.
Required Skills
- Strong Python programming skills.
- Experience with PyTorch or TensorFlow.
- Strong knowledge of OpenCV, NumPy, Pandas, SciPy.
- Experience in Computer Vision / Machine Learning.
- Object detection, object tracking, multi-object tracking, or sensor fusion.
- Understanding of probabilistic matching and uncertainty estimation.
- Experience with statistical analysis and experimental evaluation.
- Good technical documentation and research-writing skills.
- Familiarity with Git/version control and reproducible ML experimentation.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with drone/UAS projects.
- Knowledge of Remote ID / ASTM F3411 / UTM/USS concepts.
- Experience with Bluetooth/Wi-Fi broadcast data or signal processing.
- Knowledge of robotics or flight-controller interfaces.
- Experience with authentication/verification protocols.
- Familiarity with LaTeX/Overleaf and Zotero/EndNote.
- Previous academic research or Q1 journal publication experience.
Education
- Master’s degree preferred in:
- Computer Science
- Artificial Intelligence
- Data Science
- Electrical/Electronics Engineering
- Robotics
- or a related field.
- Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree and strong relevant industry/research experience may also be considered.
