Location: Little Stars and She Women & Children Hospital Banjara Hills.
Reports To: Nursing Supervisor / Nursing Superintendent
Qualification: B.Sc Nursing / GNM with valid Nursing Council Registration
Experience: 1–3 years in Pediatric Oncology, Hematology, ICU, BMT, Stem Cell Transplant, or Critical Care Nursing
Position Summary
The Pediatric Oncology Staff Nurse is responsible for providing specialized nursing care to children undergoing chemotherapy, bone marrow transplantation (BMT), hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), immunotherapy, and related treatments. The nurse will monitor patients throughout the transplant process, manage complications, administer medications and blood products, maintain strict infection control practices, and provide emotional support to patients and families. BMT and stem cell transplant care requires close multidisciplinary coordination and vigilant monitoring for complications such as infection, graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), and treatment-related toxicities.
Key ResponsibilitiesClinical Patient Care
- Provide comprehensive nursing care to pediatric oncology and transplant patients.
- Perform detailed physical assessments and monitor vital signs, fluid balance, and laboratory parameters.
- Assess patients for early signs of infection, sepsis, bleeding, organ dysfunction, and transplant-related complications.
- Develop and implement individualized nursing care plans.
- Maintain accurate nursing documentation and electronic medical records.
Bone Marrow & Stem Cell Transplant Care
- Assist in pre-transplant evaluation, preparation, and patient education.
- Care for patients receiving autologous, allogeneic, and cord blood stem cell transplants.
- Monitor patients during stem cell infusion and identify adverse reactions promptly.
- Observe for signs of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), graft failure, mucositis, and other transplant complications.
- Participate in post-transplant monitoring and long-term follow-up care.
Medication Administration
- Administer chemotherapy, immunosuppressants, antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals, and supportive medications as prescribed.
- Administer blood and blood products safely according to hospital protocols.
- Monitor and document medication effectiveness and adverse reactions.
- Maintain competency in pediatric dosage calculations and infusion therapy.
Central Line & Infusion Management
- Manage PICC lines, Hickman lines, central venous catheters, and implanted ports.
- Perform sterile dressing changes and catheter care.
- Monitor for catheter-related infections and complications.
- Administer IV fluids, parenteral nutrition, blood products, and stem cell infusions.
Infection Prevention & Safety
- Maintain protective isolation protocols for immunocompromised patients.
- Follow strict hand hygiene and infection control practices.
- Educate families regarding infection prevention measures.
- Ensure compliance with NABH and hospital quality standards.
- Monitor neutropenic patients and promptly escalate concerns.
Family Education & Support
- Educate parents regarding treatment plans, medications, nutrition, and post-discharge care.
- Provide emotional support and counseling to patients and caregivers.
- Assist families in understanding transplant procedures and recovery expectations.
- Coordinate care with psychologists, social workers, and rehabilitation teams when required.
Multidisciplinary Collaboration
- Work closely with pediatric oncologists, hematologists, transplant physicians, pharmacists, dietitians, and allied health professionals.
- Participate in ward rounds, case discussions, audits, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Support clinical research activities and transplant program requirements when applicable.
