Key Responsibilities
- Weld Finishing: Grind down weld beads to a flush or smooth radius using angle grinders and sanding discs without compromising the structural integrity of the weld.
- Deburring & Deflashing: Remove sharp edges, burrs, and "slag" from laser-cut, plasma-cut, or sawed parts to ensure safe handling and proper fitment.
- Surface Preparation: Prep metal surfaces (steel, aluminum, or stainless) for secondary processes like powder coating, galvanizing, or painting by creating the correct surface "tooth" or texture.
- Blending: Skillfully blend joints and corners so that fabricated seams are invisible or aesthetically pleasing.
- Tool Selection: Choose the correct abrasive (flapper discs, hard stones, wire wheels, or belt sanders) based on the metal type and required finish.
- Visual Inspection: Check for pinholes, cracks, or undercut in welds while grinding and report defects to the welding team.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Experience: 1–3 years in a metal fabrication shop or "fettling" environment.
- Tool Proficiency: Expert-level control of pneumatic and electric power tools (4.5" and 7" angle grinders, die grinders, and belt grinders).
- Material Knowledge: Understanding how different metals react to heat (to avoid warping thin-gauge sheet metal during grinding).
- Physical Strength: This is a physically demanding role; you must be able to handle heavy grinders, flip large fabricated frames, and stand for 8–10 hours.
- Blueprint Literacy: Ability to identify "Grind Flush" or "Smooth Finish" symbols on fabrication drawings.
Safety & Environment
- PPE Mastery: Must be comfortable wearing a full-face shield, respirator (for metal dust), ear protection, and leather aprons/gloves.
- Dust Control: Knowledge of using downdraft tables or local exhaust ventilation to manage grinding dust.
- Fire Safety: Awareness of spark direction and flammable materials in a fabrication environment.
