Designation: Blood Centre Technician
Department: Blood Centre / Blood Bank
Reports To: Medical Officer / Blood Centre In-charge
Location: Sree Abirami Hospital
Employment Type: Full-Time / Rotational Shift
Duty: General / Shift / Emergency Duty as required
2. Job Purpose
To perform technical and laboratory activities related to blood collection, blood grouping, compatibility testing, processing, storage, quality control and issue of blood and blood components, ensuring patient safety and compliance with applicable blood centre standards, hospital policies and SOPs.
3. Key ResponsibilitiesA. Blood Collection & Donor Services
- Assist in blood donation activities and blood donation camps.
- Register and identify blood donors accurately.
- Assist with donor screening and pre-donation procedures as per SOP.
- Perform blood collection under appropriate supervision.
- Ensure correct identification, labeling and documentation of blood bags and samples.
- Monitor donors during and after blood donation.
- Identify and immediately report donor adverse reactions to the Medical Officer/In-charge.
- Ensure proper storage and transportation of collected blood.
B. Blood Grouping & Immunohematology
- Perform ABO and Rh blood grouping accurately.
- Perform cross-matching and compatibility testing.
- Perform antibody screening and other immunohematological tests as instructed.
- Perform Direct/Indirect Coombs tests where applicable.
- Investigate discrepancies in blood grouping and cross-matching and report them to the Medical Officer/In-charge.
- Ensure accurate documentation of all test results.
C. Blood Component Preparation
Where the Blood Centre is licensed and equipped for component preparation:
- Process whole blood according to approved SOPs.
- Prepare and handle components such as:
- Packed Red Blood Cells (PRBC)
- Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP)
- Platelet Concentrate
- Cryoprecipitate
- Ensure proper labeling, storage and segregation of blood components.
- Monitor component storage conditions and expiry dates.
D. Transfusion-Transmitted Infection (TTI) Screening
- Perform screening of donated blood for mandatory transfusion-transmitted infections as per applicable regulations and approved SOPs.
- Ensure proper handling of test kits, reagents and samples.
- Maintain appropriate records of screening results.
- Immediately report reactive/positive results according to the Blood Centre's SOP and regulatory requirements.
India's blood-transfusion service requires donated blood to be screened for HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Syphilis and Malaria.
E. Blood Storage & Inventory Management
- Maintain appropriate temperature and storage conditions for blood and blood components.
- Monitor blood bank refrigerators, platelet storage equipment and other relevant equipment.
- Maintain stock of blood groups and components.
- Monitor expiry dates and quarantine/rejection status.
- Ensure proper segregation of suitable, quarantined, expired and discarded units.
- Maintain daily inventory records.
- Inform the In-charge about critical shortages or excess stock.
F. Blood Issue & Compatibility
- Receive and verify blood/component requests from authorized hospital departments.
- Verify patient identification, blood group, compatibility and documentation before issue.
- Perform pre-transfusion checks as required by SOP.
- Issue compatible blood/components only after completing required verification.
- Maintain complete issue and return records.
- Handle emergency blood requirements promptly while following approved emergency procedures.
G. Equipment & Laboratory Maintenance
- Operate blood centre equipment safely and correctly.
- Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of equipment.
- Maintain equipment logbooks.
- Monitor temperature-recording devices and alarms.
- Report equipment malfunction immediately.
- Ensure calibration, validation and preventive maintenance are performed as scheduled.
- Maintain records relating to equipment maintenance and calibration. Equipment management and validation are important components of blood-centre quality management.
H. Quality Control & Documentation
- Follow all approved SOPs, work instructions and quality-control procedures.
- Perform internal quality-control activities as assigned.
- Maintain accurate registers, records and electronic documentation.
- Maintain records related to:
- Blood collection
- Donor details
- Blood grouping
- Cross-matching
- TTI screening
- Blood/component preparation
- Storage
- Issue and return
- Discarded/expired units
- Equipment maintenance
- Reagents and consumables
- Participate in internal and external quality-assurance activities as applicable.
- Report errors, incidents, non-conformities and adverse events to the appropriate authority.
I. Infection Control & Biomedical Waste Management
- Follow infection-control practices and standard precautions.
- Use appropriate PPE while handling blood, samples and contaminated materials.
- Follow safe handling and disposal of sharps.
- Segregate and dispose of biomedical waste according to applicable hospital and regulatory procedures.
- Maintain cleanliness and disinfection of work areas and equipment.
J. Emergency & Shift Responsibilities
- Provide technical support during emergency blood requirements.
- Be available for rotational shifts, night duty and emergency duty as assigned.
- Respond promptly to urgent requests from OT, ICU, Emergency, Labour Room and other authorized departments.
- Maintain confidentiality of donor and patient information.
4. Qualification & Experience
Essential Qualification:
Candidates should possess a qualification recognized/accepted for the Blood Centre Technician role, such as:
- DMLT / Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology, Transfusion Medicine or Blood Bank Technology after 10+2, with applicable experience in a licensed Blood Centre; OR
- Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology / Blood Bank Technology with applicable Blood Centre experience; OR
- B.Sc. in Hematology and Transfusion Medicine with applicable experience; OR
- M.Sc. in Transfusion Medicine with applicable experience; OR
- PGDMLT / PGDMLS with applicable experience.
