Job Summary: The Resident Medical Officer (RMO) will be responsible for providing comprehensive medical care and clinical support to both inpatients and outpatients under the supervision of the consultant team. The role involves active participation in patient management, monitoring, and coordination across departments to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality care delivery in accordance with hospital protocols.
Key Roles & Responsibilities
1. Clinical Management of Patients
· Conduct complete admission examinations for each patient and document clinical findings accurately.
· Attend consultant-led ward rounds and participate in discussions on patient treatment plans.
· Provide 12-hour medical coverage on a rotational basis as per hospital duty roster.
· Inform admitting consultants promptly of any significant changes in patient condition and record all relevant actions taken.
· Conduct daily morning and evening ward rounds, ensuring that all patients are reviewed regularly.
· Record in patient notes all examinations, communications, and procedures performed — with clear signature, date, and time.
· Follow consultant instructions and implement prescribed treatment regimens for each patient.
· Perform clinical procedures as requested by consultant or nursing staff, including phlebotomy and intravenous drug monitoring.
· Initiate and alter inpatient prescriptions upon consultant’s request.
· Prepare “shift-out notes” for patients being transferred from critical care or between departments.
· Respond promptly to requests from nursing staff for patient review or intervention.
· Ensure familiarity with all relevant hospital policies, clinical procedures, and emergency protocols.
· Participate in clinical audits, governance initiatives, and quality improvement activities.
· Contribute to NABH documentation and quality improvement processes.
· Seek informed consent only for procedures performed personally, and document consent clearly in medical records.
· Under no circumstances should RMOs seek consent for surgical or procedural interventions on behalf of consultants.
2. Inpatient (IP) Care
· Monitor admitted patients, perform regular rounds, and update clinical notes.
· Coordinate with consultants, nursing, and allied health teams for effective patient management.
· Recognize and respond appropriately to changes in patient condition.
3. Admissions & Discharges
· Manage admission formalities, including initial assessments and baseline investigations.
· Prepare discharge summaries and ensure completion of all related formalities.
· Educate patients and families regarding discharge instructions, medications, and follow-up care.
4. Documentation & Compliance
· Ensure timely and accurate completion of medical records, progress notes, and treatment charts.
· Maintain strict compliance with hospital policies, clinical protocols, and statutory documentation standards.
· Contribute to maintaining quality and patient safety standards as per NABH norms.
o Admission Files: Duty doctors must complete and sign all admission files during their shift, including name and KMC registration number.
o Progress Notes: Record progress notes for every shift (two per day) in all inpatient files, with signature and KMC registration number.
o Discharge Summary: Ensure discharge summaries include the name and signature of the duty doctor and are verified by the treating consultant with proper signature and hospital stamp.
5. Operational Responsibilities
· Be fully familiar with the use and location of all emergency and resuscitation equipment.
· Record all treatments and interventions accurately in patient notes.
· Provide a detailed handover report to the incoming RMO at the end of each shift to ensure continuity of care.
6. Emergency Responsibilities
· Respond immediately to all medical emergencies within the hospital.
· Perform CPR and other emergency procedures as per hospital policy and BLS/ACLS guidelines.
· Initiate emergency treatment for patients, staff, or visitors when required and document all interventions properly.
· Initiate and manage emergency medical care for both medical and surgical emergencies in critical care areas until the consultant arrives.
7. Academic & Departmental Activities
· Participate actively in departmental academic sessions, case discussions, and training programs.
· Engage in continuous professional development (CPD) through reading, research, and skill enhancement.
· Support hospital quality and accreditation programs, including NABH and internal audits.
8. In-Service Education & Promotion of the Hospital
· Promote patient care by maintaining effective liaison with all hospital departments.
· Participate in in-service education programs, including CPR training, Health & Safety, Fire Safety, and NABH-related programs.
· Ensure ongoing medical competence through regular participation in internal training and review of current medical literature.
· Carry out any other duties or responsibilities assigned by the Head of Department (HOD) or Hospital Management from time to time.
9. Knowledge & Skills
· Strong clinical judgment and diagnostic ability.
· Proficient in-patient assessment, clinical documentation, and ward management.
· Sound knowledge of hospital procedures, protocols, and emergency management.
· Familiarity with NABH standards, infection control, and hospital quality systems.
· Effective communication and interpersonal skills for working in a multidisciplinary team.
