The Metallurgical Engineer is responsible for planning, monitoring, and managing all metallurgical and foundry operations related to the manufacturing of brake drums and wheel hubs.
The role ensures consistent product quality, process optimization, production efficiency, cost control, and compliance with safety and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
Production Management
Manage day-to-day foundry operations.
Ensure achievement of daily, weekly, and monthly production targets.
Plan manpower, raw materials, and machine utilization.
Minimize production downtime and bottlenecks.
Metallurgical ControlControl chemical composition of molten metal.
Supervise melting, inoculation, and alloy additions.Ensure correct pouring temperatures and process parameters.Monitor casting quality and metallurgical properties.
Quality AssuranceEnsure brake drums and hubs meet customer specifications.
Investigate casting defects such as:BlowholesShrinkageCold shutsMisrunsSand inclusionsHard spotsCracksImplement corrective and preventive actions.Coordinate with the quality department for inspections and testing.Process ImprovementOptimize melting yield and casting yield.Reduce rejection and rework.Improve productivity and cycle time.Introduce process improvements for cost reduction.Raw Material ManagementMonitor usage of pig iron, steel scrap, returns, ferroalloys, and inoculants.Ensure proper charge mix.Maintain inventory control of foundry consumables.Furnace & Equipment MonitoringSupervise induction furnace operations.Coordinate preventive maintenance.Ensure proper functioning of molding, pouring, shot blasting, and fettling equipment.DocumentationMaintain production records.Prepare heat reports and quality reports.Maintain process parameters.Analyze production data and submit management reports.Team ManagementSupervise foundry supervisors, operators, and workers.Train employees on standard operating procedures.Monitor attendance, discipline, and productivity.Promote teamwork and continuous improvement.Safety & ComplianceEnsure compliance with safety regulations.Enforce PPE usage.Conduct safety inspections.Ensure environmentally responsible foundry operations.Customer SupportAssist in customer complaint analysis.Participate in root cause analysis.Support new product development and process trials.Required QualificationsBachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Engineering.5–10 years of experience in cast iron foundry operations.Experience in manufacturing brake drums, wheel hubs, or automotive castings.Required SkillsStrong knowledge of grey iron and ductile iron metallurgy.Knowledge of induction furnace operation.Casting defect analysis.Sand system management.Heat treatment (if applicable).Production planning.Lean manufacturing concepts.Root Cause Analysis (RCA).Quality systems.Leadership and team management.Problem-solving and decision-making.Good communication skills.Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)Production target achievement (%)Casting rejection rateFirst-pass yieldFurnace efficiencyMetal recovery/yieldCustomer complaintsCost per castingOn-time deliveryOverall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE)Safety incidents (target: zero)
