1. ROLE CONTEXT & STRATEGIC PURPOSE
The Assistant Manager – Engineering Design & CAD is a pivotal mid-senior role responsible for leading the delivery of multi-disciplinary engineering design and CAD output across a high volume, client-facing environment. The client requests are anchored in architectural/CAD drafting, mechanical product design, and civil/structural engineering – making this role the operational core of the engineering delivery function. This role sits at the intersection of technical delivery, team supervision, and client requirement translation. The incumbent must be capable of independently managing early-stage project scoping, converting ambiguous client briefs into structured engineering outputs, and guiding a team of junior engineers and CAD technicians through execution.
2. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
2.1 Lead Conversion, Team management, Design Leadership & Client Delivery. ▪ Convert Engineering leads post liaising with the customer and other stake holders. Would also need to be on a client project along with picking up lead. So, need to be flexible in working in the capacity of an individual contributor as well as team leader. ▪ Own end-to-end engineering design delivery for assigned projects, from client brief to final documentation. ▪ Translate high-level, non-technical client requirements into structured engineering solutions and CAD deliverables. ▪ Develop conceptual and detailed engineering designs across architecture, mechanical, and civil disciplines. ▪ Apply engineering judgment to assess project feasibility prior to specialist escalation. ▪ Review, approve, and sign off on deliverables prepared by junior engineers and CAD technicians. ▪ Manage multiple simultaneous projects in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
2.2 CAD, Drafting & Documentation Management ▪ Prepare and review AutoCAD / Revit drawings: floor plans, sections, elevations, site plans, and technical layouts. ▪ Convert sketches, PDFs, rough concepts, and client inputs into clear, accurate engineering drawings. ▪ Ensure drawing quality, consistency, and compliance with client specifications and project standards. ▪ Manage drawing revision cycles, incorporating feedback from clients and senior engineers efficiently. ▪ Maintain structured CAD file and documentation management protocols across the team.
2.3 Mechanical & Product Design Support ▪ Develop or oversee 3D models and mechanical layouts for products, components, and equipment. ▪ Apply manufacturing-oriented design thinking: material awareness, tolerances, fit and form considerations. ▪ Support SolidWorks / Fusion 360 based modelling projects where required. ▪ Coordinate with mechanical specialists on complex designs requiring higher engineering validation.
2.4 Team Management & Mentoring ▪ Directly supervise and mentor a team of design engineers, CAD technicians, and drafters. ▪ Allocate work across the team based on skillset, capacity, and project priority. ▪ Conduct regular design reviews, providing constructive technical feedback to improve output quality. ▪ Build team capability through on-the-job coaching, skill gap identification, and structured learning initiatives. ▪ Maintain team productivity metrics, flag blockers proactively, and escalate as needed.
2.5 Pre-Sales & Requirement Scoping ▪ Provide effort estimations, technical feasibility inputs, and solution outlines for proposals and quotations. ▪ Participate in initial client calls or discovery sessions to extract and document engineering requirements. ▪ Identify cross-sell opportunities when client needs span multiple engineering disciplines. 2.6 Quality Assurance & Process Improvement ▪ Establish and enforce drawing standards, CAD templates, and quality checklists across the team. ▪ Track rework rates, client revision requests, and delivery turnaround times – driving continuous improvement. ▪ Implement process improvements to reduce bottlenecks in the design and delivery pipeline. ▪ Ensure adherence to relevant engineering standards (IS, BS, ASTM, ISO as applicable to project type).
3. QUALIFICATIONS & EDUCATION Minimum Qualification: Bachelor's Degree (B.E. / B.Tech) in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Architecture, or related discipline Preferred: Master's Degree (M.E. / M.Tech) or Post-Graduate Diploma in Engineering Design, CAD/CAM, or Structural Engineering Certifications (Added Advantage): Autodesk Certified Professional (ACP), SolidWorks CSWA/CSWP, Revit BIM Certification, PMP / Prince2 4. SKILLS & COMPETENCIES 4.1 Must-Have Technical Skills ▪ Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD (2D drafting, layouts, annotations, plot sheets) – minimum 4+ years hands-on ▪ Strong understanding of engineering drawing standards and multi-disciplinary drawing interpretation ▪ Proven ability to manage ambiguous project inputs and convert them into structured deliverables ▪ Solid grasp of architectural, mechanical, and civil engineering fundamentals ▪ Experience working with clients or stakeholders to gather, refine, and validate engineering requirements ▪ Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for reporting and project documentation 4.2 Preferred / Good-to-Have Technical Skills ▪ SolidWorks or Fusion 360 (3D modelling, assemblies, part drawings) – mid-level proficiency preferred ▪ Revit / BIM experience (Architectural or MEP) – particularly for large-scale residential and commercial projects ▪ Exposure to MEP systems (HVAC layouts, plumbing schematic, electrical single-line diagrams) ▪ Basic knowledge of structural engineering concepts (beam sizing, loading, foundation types) ▪ Familiarity with civil design tools (Civil 3D, MicroStation, or equivalent) ▪ Experience with rendering tools (Lumion, Enscape, 3ds Max) for visualization projects ▪ Understanding of international building codes (AS, NCC, NEC, Eurocodes) – given global client base 4.3 Leadership & Soft Skills ▪ Strong problem-solving mindset – comfortable with open-ended, early-stage, exploratory briefs ▪ Clear, confident communication with both technical and non-technical stakeholders ▪ Ownership mindset – ability to take accountability for end-to-end project outcomes ▪ Ability to multitask and manage competing priorities across 4–10+ concurrent projects ▪ Team leadership capability – able to coach, correct, and motivate junior engineers ▪ Collaborative approach with pre-sales, client success, and senior management teams 5. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Total Experience: 6–10 years in engineering design, CAD drafting, or related multi-disciplinary technical role Design & CAD Experience: Minimum 5 years of hands-on AutoCAD / CAD drafting across at least two disciplines (e.g., architectural + mechanical) Leadership Experience: Minimum 2–3 years of team lead, supervisory, or senior engineer experience (direct or functional) Client Interaction: Prior exposure to client-facing roles – interpreting briefs, managing expectations, presenting solutions Industry Background: Engineering services firm, design consultancy, EPC company, or CAD outsourcing environment preferred
