Job Summary
The Automation Engineer (L3) is responsible for designing, developing, and operating network automation workflows using iTential as the core platform. This role integrates automation with ServiceNow for ITSM-driven execution (incidents/changes/requests) and establishes a robust CI/CD and version-control practice using Bitbucket. The engineer partners with network operations and engineering teams to identify high-value use cases, build reusable automation modules, and improve reliability, compliance, and speed of execution across the network estate.
Key Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities • Design and develop automation workflows on iTential for network operations, incident response, and change execution. • Integrate iTential workflows with ServiceNow to enable ticket-driven automation (e.g., automated change creation/updates, approvals routing, execution status updates, closure evidence). • Build and maintain reusable automation components (templates, modules, libraries) to accelerate delivery and improve standardization. • Establish and operate code versioning, branching, peer-review, and release practices using Bitbucket (pull requests, code reviews, release tagging). • Implement automation quality gates: unit testing, pre/post validation, rollback logic, and audit artifacts for compliance. • Troubleshoot workflow failures and platform issues; provide L3 escalation support and root-cause analysis for automation incidents. • Work with network SMEs to translate operational procedures (runbooks/ROC) into safe, automated workflows and policies. • Develop and maintain dashboards/metrics for automation adoption, success rate, failure trends, and business value outcomes. • Support secure automation practices (least privilege, secrets handling, credential rotation where applicable) and alignment to customer controls. • Mentor L2 engineers/analysts, and contribute to automation playbooks, SOPs, and knowledge base documentation. Tools & Platforms (Experience With) • iTential – automation workflow development and orchestration (core platform). • ServiceNow – ITSM integration for Incident / Problem / Change / Request workflows and automation triggering. • Bitbucket – source control management, branching strategy, code reviews, and release management. • Network tool ecosystem (as applicable): Cisco SD-WAN Manager (vManage), Cisco ISE, Cisco FMC/CDO, Meraki Dashboard, Arista CloudVision, F5 BIG-IQ, InfoBlox Gridmaster, logging/telemetry tools. • Automation support tooling: API clients, REST/SOAP integrations, JSON/YAML, scripting utilities.
Skill Requirements
8+ years of network engineering / network operations experience with strong troubleshooting background. • Hands-on experience building automation workflows on iTential (or equivalent orchestration platform) and operating them in production. • Strong understanding of enterprise networking: routing & switching, WAN/SD-WAN, wireless, security fundamentals, and load balancing concepts. • Strong software engineering fundamentals: clean code practices, debugging, structured logging, and error handling. • Proficiency with at least one programming/scripting language commonly used for automation (e.g., Python, JavaScript) and data formats (JSON/YAML). • Experience integrating enterprise platforms via APIs (REST preferred) and handling authentication/authorization patterns. • Experience with version control and DevOps practices using Bitbucket (Git), including branching, PR reviews, and release tagging. • Experience with ITIL/ITSM processes and integrating automation into controlled change/incident workflows via ServiceNow. • Ability to work in a global delivery model and support rotational/on-call needs when required. Preferred Certifications • ITIL v4 (preferred). • Cisco certifications (CCNP preferred; CCNA acceptable depending on experience). • Automation / DevOps / Cloud networking certifications are a plus.
Other Requirements
Preferred Certifications • ITIL v4 (preferred). • Cisco certifications (CCNP preferred; CCNA acceptable depending on experience). • Automation / DevOps / Cloud networking certifications are a plus. Soft Skills • Strong communication and stakeholder management; ability to explain automation outcomes and risks clearly. • Ownership mindset with strong prioritization and ability to operate under pressure. • Continuous-improvement orientation; proactive in identifying automation opportunities and operational efficiencies. • Collaborative approach working across operations, engineering, and governance teams.
