Job Title: Physician Assistant
Job Summary
The Physician Assistant is responsible for providing continuous medical support to consultants by assisting in the assessment, treatment, and management of admitted and emergency patients. The role includes providing 24-hour medical coverage as per duty roster, responding to emergencies, coordinating patient care with consultants and nursing staff, and ensuring timely documentation and adherence to hospital policies and protocols.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide routine and emergency medical care during assigned duty hours and work in coordination with other Physician Assistants to ensure uninterrupted 24-hour patient care.
- Conduct daily morning and evening ward rounds independently or along with consultants and nursing staff, as applicable.
- Assess, examine, and monitor patients admitted under the care of consultants and promptly communicate any significant clinical findings.
- Respond immediately to emergency calls from wards, ICU, HDU, Emergency Department, and other clinical areas as required.
- Assist consultants in the diagnosis, treatment planning, bedside procedures, and management of patients.
- Perform medical procedures within the scope of qualification, competency, and hospital policy, under the guidance of the treating consultant.
- Physician Assistants shall not obtain consent for any surgery or procedure on behalf of a consultant. Consent shall be obtained only by the operating/procedural consultant. However, the Physician Assistant may obtain consent for procedures personally performed within the approved scope of practice.
- Communicate regularly with nursing staff regarding patient progress and attend patients whenever requested.
- Review post-operative patients on the day of surgery and daily thereafter, as directed by the treating consultant.
- Prepare discharge summaries, discharge instructions, and explain discharge medications to patients whenever assigned by the consultant.
- Administer intravenous medications, IV fluids, and other prescribed therapies as per hospital protocol.
- Perform emergency procedures, including Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and resuscitation whenever required.
- Certify deaths, complete death certificates, and prepare all related statutory documentation as per applicable legal and hospital guidelines (where permitted under applicable regulations and hospital policy).
- Ensure complete, accurate, and timely documentation in patient medical records and maintain confidentiality in accordance with hospital policies.
- Ensure all consumables, procedures, and services provided are accurately documented and charged to the patient's account as per hospital revenue capture policies.
- Coordinate effectively with consultants, nursing staff, laboratory, radiology, pharmacy, and other departments to ensure seamless patient care.
- Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives, NABH activities, CMEs, departmental meetings, and mandatory training programs.
- Remain on hospital premises during duty hours unless officially relieved by the Medical Administration.
- In case of non-reporting of the relieving Physician Assistant, continue providing patient care until an appropriate replacement is arranged to ensure uninterrupted medical coverage.
- Comply with all hospital policies, NABH standards, infection prevention and control practices, biomedical waste management guidelines, patient safety protocols, and occupational health and safety requirements.
- Perform any other clinical or administrative responsibilities assigned by the Consultant, Head – Medical Services, or Hospital Management within the scope of professional competence.

- Knowledge of NABH standards and hospital protocols is desirable.
Experience: 2–5 years in a hospital setting.
Qualification:
- MBBS / BAMS / BHMS
- Valid Registration Certificate from the respective State Council (where applicable).
- BLS Certification is mandatory; ACLS Certification is preferred.
