An electrical technician installs, troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains electrical systems and equipment to ensure safe, reliable operations. They work with wiring, control panels, and fixtures, utilizing testing tools and blueprints to diagnose issues and ensure compliance with building and safety regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Troubleshooting: Diagnose electrical faults using specialized testing instruments (e.g., multimeters, ammeters, thermal scanners) to identify short circuits or faulty wiring.
- Installation & Assembly: Assemble, install, and wire electrical components, distribution equipment, and control panels.
- Maintenance: Perform preventive maintenance on switchgears, circuit breakers, relays, and motors to prevent equipment breakdowns.
- Plan Reading: Read and interpret electrical blueprints, wiring schematics, and single-line diagrams to ensure accurate placement and installation.
- Compliance & Safety: Ensure all work meets local and national electrical safety codes, utilizing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and adhering to Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) protocols.
Education & Qualifications
- Degree/Apprenticeship: A 2-year degree in electrical/electronic technology, or completion of a formal electrical apprenticeship.
- Technical Knowledge: Understanding of low-voltage systems, motors, controls, and grounding/bonding.
- Physical Requirements: Physical stamina for working in cramped spaces or at heights, strength to lift up to 50 lbs, and clear color vision for color-coded wiring.
Skills Required
- Exceptional troubleshooting and critical thinking skills.
- Strong manual dexterity and proficiency with hand and power tools.
- Excellent understanding of electrical codes and risk management.
