The ICU In-Charge is responsible for the overall management and coordination of nursing services within the Intensive Care Unit. The role ensures high-quality critical care, effective staff supervision, patient safety, compliance with hospital policies, and optimal utilization of ICU resources.
1. Clinical Patient Care Management
- Ensure delivery of safe, evidence-based, and high-quality critical care nursing services.
- Monitor critically ill patients and ensure timely interventions.
- Coordinate patient care plans with intensivists, physicians, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Assist in emergency procedures, resuscitation, and code blue situations.
- Ensure accurate documentation of assessments, treatments, and nursing care.
2. Staff Management and Supervision
- Supervise ICU nurses, nursing assistants, and support staff.
- Prepare and manage duty rosters and staff assignments.
- Monitor staff competency and performance.
- Provide orientation, mentoring, and continuous education to nursing staff.
- Ensure adherence to ICU protocols, policies, and standards of care.
3. ICU Operations Management
- Manage patient admissions, transfers, and discharges.
- Ensure adequate staffing levels for patient acuity.
- Monitor ICU bed utilization and patient flow.
- Coordinate with biomedical, pharmacy, laboratory, radiology, and housekeeping departments.
- Ensure availability and proper functioning of ICU equipment.
4. Equipment and Inventory Management
- Ensure readiness and maintenance of ventilators, monitors, infusion pumps, defibrillators, and other critical care equipment.
- Monitor stock levels of medications, consumables, and emergency supplies.
- Maintain crash carts and emergency equipment in operational condition.
- Report equipment malfunctions and coordinate repairs.
5. Infection Prevention and Control
- Ensure compliance with infection control policies and protocols.
- Monitor hand hygiene and isolation precautions.
- Implement measures to reduce hospital-acquired infections.
- Participate in infection surveillance and reporting activities.
6. Quality Assurance and Patient Safety
- Ensure compliance with hospital quality standards and accreditation requirements.
- Monitor clinical indicators and patient safety metrics.
- Investigate and report incidents, medication errors, and adverse events.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and audits.
7. Communication and Coordination
- Facilitate effective communication among healthcare team members.
- Conduct shift handovers and nursing briefings.
- Communicate patient status and care plans to families as appropriate.
- Address patient and family concerns professionally and promptly.
Qualifications
- B.Sc. Nursing or M.Sc. Nursing preferred.
- Valid Registered Nurse license as per regulatory requirements.
- Minimum 3–5 years of ICU/critical care nursing experience.
- At least 1–2 years of supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
- Certification in BLS and ACLS preferred.
